Dear Sawyer Families,
I can’t believe that we are about to enter the month of May. While this has been a challenging
year in a lot of ways, it seems like the year has flown by. We are busy preparing for the end of
the year and are beginning to think about what next year will look like.
For those of you who have 5th grade students, be on the lookout for a message from Ames
Middle School today that provides information that you will need to know in order to help your
child sign up for classes next year. The middle school counselors will be meeting with students
at Sawyer in the morning on May 7th. They will be meeting with all remote campus students in
the afternoon on May 7th. If you have questions about middle school, please reach out to
Jennifer Haglund, AMS counselor, or Erin Miller, Associate Principal for 6th grade students,
I’m looking forward to having more students at Sawyer next year as well as welcoming parents
and volunteers into our building. It will be nice to have activities for students and families to
attend in person as well. If you’re a planner, we’d love to have you join our parent teacher
organization (PTO) next year. We are currently looking for people who are interested in
serving on the board. Board members will be elected at the next PTO meeting on Tuesday, May
11. If you’re looking to get involved with the school, this is a great opportunity!
Also, don’t forget to watch the Sawyer 10-second Talent Show tonight. I’m excited to see all of
the talent and our students are excited, too. We hope that you’ll be able to join us. If you’re not
able to, we will be posting a video of the talent show at a later date.
Have a wonderful weekend!

THE BLACK BOOK NOOK:
ISU’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office partnered with the Ames Public Library to create
The Black Book Nook, which is a curated, new physical literature collection that highlights
African American scholarship in various capacities. A web page has been created on the Ames
Public Library website that serves as an online directory where community members could
browse the collection digitally and discover where they can locate the physical titles in the
library. (Please see the link for a complete list of titles.) The Ames Public Library also included
spine labels on each book to differentiate them from the rest of the library’s collection and to
allow for serendipitous discovery for library users who may not otherwise seek out this
collection. Here is the browsing link:
The 2021-2022 school year calendar was recently approved by the Ames
School Board. You can print a copy here:

Family Critical Consciousness Learning Series
We are excited to bring our Critical Consciousness training to our community through a family
learning series. Once a month, we will be coming together virtually (from 7-8:30 p.m.) to learn
more about what it means to be critically conscious and why it’s important! Here are the
