BOOK FAIR

The Fellows online Book Fair officially opens on Monday, October 26th.  Please log on at https://efairs.follettbookfairs.com/  and enter code M8GGL.  All of the books purchased will be shipped to Fellows and distributed to students either in class or during the materials distribution on Dec 14 for remote learners.  Families also have the opportunity to help teachers build their classroom libraries by donating a book on teachers’ Wish Lists. Gifted books will receive a bookplate sticker to put inside with the Donor’s name.

Book fair proceeds go to purchasing new books for the Fellows library, so it’s a win-win situation – families can stock their home libraries and our school library at the same time! If you have questions please email kris.baldwin@ames.k12.ia.us. Thank you for your support of our school library!

WINTER CLOTHES DRIVE

TO GIVE: Please consider donating gently used or new winter clothes such as coats, hats, waterproof gloves, snow pants, and boots (all sizes welcome – please place them in a tied grocery bag to keep boots together). Donations will be accepted from Oct. 24- Nov. 21 at the Volunteer Center of Story County, 110 Crystal St. Ames, IA (515-268-5323).

TO RECEIVE: There are two ways that winter items can be requested. The first is by completing an online form. The second is by printing off this Google Doc and returning it to your student’s school.

Please fill out the information by November 2, 2020. If you need more than one item, please put an asterisk next to the highest priority. Our goal is for items to be distributed by December 1. If you have an urgent need prior to December 1, please contact Fellows’ Student and Family Advocate, Amber Franzeen at amber.franzeen@ames.k12.ia.us (515) 715-5355.

CHROMEBOOK CHARGER REPLACEMENT

Parents, please search your homes, cars, nooks and crannies for extra Chromebook chargers that may have gotten lost. Pre-COVID, the district has not had to charge K-5 families for the cost of lost chargers but unfortunately, they may need to consider charges for these students moving forward due to the high number of replacement requests for lost chargers.

SCHOOL PICTURES

Cohort 1/2 Monday, October 19th.
Cohort 3/4 Friday, October 23rd.
REMOTE Student Pictures are Wednesday, October 21st, from 8:45 to 3:00 p.m.

We ask that parents walk remote student(s) to the south doors nearest the bus drop-off area and practice social distancing while waiting.  Everyone is asked to wear a mask while on school property and parents are asked to remain outside the building when your child is accompanied inside to have their picture taken just inside the doors.  Please park in the Fellows parking lot while here for Remote pictures.  Thank you.

School pictures may be ordered electronically using Picture Day ID: EVTH94F3S at mylifetouch.com.  Please park in the Fellows parking lot for Remote pictures.  All students will receive one homeroom composite picture free of charge.

DRIVEWAY REMINDERS: Please remember the following safety protocols when dropping off and picking up your students.

1. Please pull all the way up past the stop sign before dropping off/picking up your child. When traffic is backed up, please be patient and wait until you are pulled all the way forward before students exit/enter the vehicle.

2. Please have your child exit the passengers side vehicle doors only.  Traffic flow on the driver’s side of your vehicle can be dangerous and student safety is our TOP priority.

3. Please walk your child across the crosswalk if you are parking in the parking lot rather than using the drive-through lane.

4. Encourage your child to walk their bikes while on school property.  Students are not allowed to use scooters, roller blades, skateboards, etc., on school property for safety reasons.

We ask that parents bring remote student(s) to the south doors nearest the bus drop-off area. Please park in the parking lot rather than the bus drop off lane. Everyone is asked to wear a mask while on school property and parents are asked to remain outside the building when your child is accompanied inside to have their picture taken. PTO MEETING: Please join our next virtual PTO meeting to be held via Zoom on October 13 at 7:0 p.m.  Check our Fellows PTO Facebook page for more information.

2020-21 REGISTRATION FEES:  Registration fees for the 2020-2021 school year were due and payable on August 24, 2020. If you have not paid your child’s registration fees for the 2020-2021 school year yet, please log into your parent portal at your earliest convenience and pay the balance due.  You may also mail a check for your child’s fee balance to Fellows Elementary, Attn. Office, 1235 20th Street, Ames IA 50010.  If you have questions about Fellows student fees, please email melanie.johnson@ames.k12.ia.us.

This Monday, September 21st, Fellows students will be welcomed back to the building in our original Hybrid model of 50% face-to-face instruction. Homeroom teachers will be sending you a reminder of your child’s cohort number (1/2 or 3/4) as your child will attend face-to-face learning in the building only on the dates indicated on the following calendar: Hybrid 2020 Calendar

NEW SCHOOL HOURS  are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. for students in Hybrid instruction. When students arrive in the morning, they will report directly to their classroom.

VISITORS:  Parents/younger siblings and visitors will be discouraged from entering the Fellows Elementary building.  If a parent needs to drop off any student materials, including lunches, they are asked to place items in the basket located outside the main entrance doors and use the intercom to let the office know who the item is for.  If you need to speak with someone inside the building, please call 515-239-3765 or contact the teacher by email and, if needed, a virtual meeting can be scheduled.

All school grounds are closed to visitors during school hours.  If visitors need access to the main entrance during school hours, please use the driveway for access.

FACE MASKS:  All students and staff will be required to wear face coverings to the maximum extent possible.  We will provide face masks for each student, but students may wear their own personal face coverings if preferred. Families will be responsible for the cleaning of student masks. Adults and any accompanying siblings who pick up and drop off students will also be required to wear face coverings if they are outside of their vehicles on school grounds.

ARRIVAL: Each grade level will have a designated entrance to the Fellows Elementary building and all students will walk directly to their classrooms upon arrival between 8:10-8:30. This includes bus students.  As students exit the bus, they will walk along the sidewalk in front of the building until they reach their designated entrance: Fellows Designated Entrances/Exits.

  • Kdg-1st bus students walk directly into the building from last year’s bus entrance.
  • K-1 students being dropped off in the driveway will enter the building through the main office entrance. This will create 1-way traffic patterns in the south-half of the building.
  • All 2nd-3rd students will all enter the building through the elevator door entrance.  These doors are just north of the main office entrance.
  • All 4th-5th grade students will enter around the north side of the building through the recess doors.  They will immediately walk up the stairs as they enter the building.

The building will open no earlier than 8:10 a.m. for students that are dropped off, walk, or ride their bikes.  Please do your best not to send students to school early as we will not have any supervision for students that arrive before 8:00 a.m.  We would also ask your help with teaching your child to wait by their respective entrance and to socially distance as they are waiting for the doors to open in the morning.  We will be spray painting social distance markings at the entrances to help students keep a 6 foot space between others.  Adults that choose to wait with their children are asked to socially distance and wear face coverings.

LATE ARRIVAL: If a student arrives at school after 8:30 a.m. he/she will use the intercom at the main entrance and wait for guidance from the office.

STUDENT CHECKOUT DURING THE SCHOOL DAY: Students leaving early will checkout with the office and meet the family member outside by the main entrance door. Parents: please notify the classroom teacher if your child will be leaving early and use the intercom at the main entrance when you have arrived to pick up your child.

DISMISSAL: Please make sure your child knows his/her after school plan for transportation or walking home. For safety and social distancing we would like parents to set a good example and be mindful of not grouping outside the doors during dismissal.  For most students, they will be exiting through the same doors as they arrived in the morning.  We will be staggering our dismissal times in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines. The students will be dismissed in the following order:

  • All students that have siblings at Fellows will be dismissed first. This will help families with multiple children to clear out of the parking lot first.
  • Kindergarten and 1st graders will either dismiss at this time or may be staggered a few minutes depending on the number of students in the hallways.
  • 3rd and 5th grade students will then be dismissed since they are in different levels of the building.
  • 2nd and 4th will be then be dismissed since they are in different levels of the building
  • All Bus students will then be dismissed with any students staying after school for ACPC
