Counselor’s Corner

BraunMy name is Cathy Braun, and I am happy to introduce myself as the School and Family Counselor at Fellows Elementary School.

I grew up in Northwood, Iowa, which is a small town near the Minnesota border.  I received my teaching degree from Iowa State University in 1989, and my school counselor’s degree from Drake University in 1999.  My husband, Rob and I decided to make Ames our home after graduating in 1989.

After spending a short time teaching sixth grade at Gilbert Elementary School, I decided to stay home and raise my twin daughters and son.  In 2008, I was excited to venture out and start my elementary counseling career at Fellows. I have been here ever since! I am really enjoying my role as a student and family advocate.

As the counselor, I am part of a team working with parents, school staff, and community resources to help create a caring and supportive place for our children. I help students overcome barriers in their academic, social, and emotional growth by providing prevention and intervention services.

My spare time is spent with my family and friends, traveling, and cheering on the Cyclones. My husband is a plumbing contractor in Ames.  Jackie and Jordyn graduated from Ames High School in 2014 and are attending DMACC.  Jared is starting high school this coming year.  We spend a lot of time sitting at football and basketball games and track meets!

I am here to serve the children, the parents and our wonderful staff. I am available for listening, talking, helping, and so much more.

Hello and thank you for visiting our counseling site!

My name is Melissa Stone and I am one of the school and family counselor split between Fellows (Grades: K-1) and Meeker (Grades: 4-5). I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in mathematics and reading from Iowa State University. I also have a Master’s of Science degree in School Counseling (K-12) from Drake University. Before becoming a professional school counselor I was a classroom teacher for nine years within the Ames & Ankeny Community School Districts.  Although, I loved being a classroom teacher I knew my calling was to be a professional school counselor.

Having worked in the schools for the last 10 years I know there are many important skills our students learn as they grow throughout their educational careers and how difficult that can be sometimes. Our children are dealing with a lot more stressors, anxieties, and pressures in our changing world that we never had to deal with. We know academics are vital in a school, but school counselors work to incorporate social/emotional skills and career development within the schools as well. I will be in your child’s classroom all year, and may also work with them in a small group or individual setting. I am an advocate for each child and will do everything I can to help each child succeed.

I look forward to growing with you and your child this school year; please do not hesitate to ask any questions as they arise.  Also, please take some time to visit my school counseling website to check out lessons and activities we are doing in the classroom, information on child development, and information which may support you as a parent!
