Scratch Pad

Scratch Pad

Founded as a way to celebrate creative talent at Ames High School, Scratch Pad has been a part of AHS history since 1962. Previously a publication put out by the Creative Writing Club, Scratch Pad was created to give budding novelists and poets a publisher for their works. As an annual publication, it was designed to feature not only outstanding pieces written for English classes, but also poems, short stories, and sketches.

AMES HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC AND ARTS BOOSTER CLUB

The Ames High School Academic and Arts Booster Club (AABC) needs more members! Please help us keep this club going by joining our grant review committee. AABC provides grants twice a year to Ames High academic and arts projects, programs, and events that positively impact AHS students. AHS students, teachers, and staff are eligible to apply for small grants that the AABC grant team reviews.

AABC seeks opportunities to fund projects outside of the regular curriculum that will benefit students.

  • Projects that are academic and/or arts based.
  • Projects that significantly affect a larger, rather than smaller, number of AHS students.
  • Projects that reflect the diversity of disciplines supported by AABC.

Our five-member team is down several volunteers. The group meets only a few times a year, and grants are reviewed electronically. For more information on serving on the AABC Board, contact Susan Gwiasda (susangwiada@yahoo.com) or LeAnn Hillier (lmhillier@msn.com).

Another way to get involved is to make a financial contribution to the AABC fund. These educational experiences are enhanced by AABC funding and encourage our students to be lifelong learners. Please send your contribution to AABC, c/o Ames High School, 1921 Ames High Drive, Ames, IA  50010.

Edwards Elementary Chess Club

Edwards Chess Club

Every Tuesday and Thursday, sometimes as early as 12:10, a line begins forming outside a room at Edwards Elementary. Anxious students duck in and out, checking the board for their name and if they are part of group one or two. Phrases like, “Did you sign up?” and “You’re in the second group,” echo through the hallway. Excitement is palpable as students weave in and out with lunch in hand. Excitement brought because of the opportunity to play chess.
