EVEN Block Day

Attention 9th & 10th grade students, your current study hall assignment was changed to a new teacher or location. This change took place yesterday March 30th. Please refer to Infinite Campus to locate your new study hall location. If you are not sure where to report, please go to the media center.  If your study hall assignment indicates it is in the cafeteria, please report to the media center.

The AHS Lacrosse Club is inviting anyone interested in learning about the sport of lacrosse to attend one of their practices.  Practices are being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00 at the Ames middle school football complex.  

Seniors……The 2nd round of CPR sessions will be held next week on April 6th and 7th. There are morning and afternoon sessions on both days. Check your email and sign up!

The Senior Art Show will be up through Friday in the Multipurpose room. See some of the great work from some of our AMAZING AHS Seniors. 

Come celebrate the 2021-2022 robotics season with Team Photon! At this event, Team Photon will show off their team and drive around their Freight Frenzy robot. This event will happen in the Ames High Auditorium on April 1st from 7-8pm. We hope to see you there!

All members of the AHS Class of 2022 are invited to audition to perform at the Baccalaureate Service Wednesday, May 25th, 2022 at 7:00pm in the Ames High School auditorium. See your email for further details.

As spring is approaching, Prom is right around the corner. Prom 2022, Golden Moments: A Night to Remember is Saturday, May 7th at the ISU Alumni Center. Make sure to follow the Prom Instagram account @ameshighprom to keep up with all the Golden Moments happening around the prom scene this year and to enter the promposal competition!

If you are bringing a date from another school you MUST fill out an out of school form.  Out of school forms are available in the auxiliary office beginning April 13th and are due Wednesday, May 4th. 

Tickets will be sold the week before prom, before AND after school for $20 each. This is the only time to purchase tickets. Five tickets will be raffled off at the coronation assembly on Friday, May 6 during plus period so make sure you attend for your chance to win! If you purchased a ticket and win the raffle, we will refund you your money!

The AHS Lacrosse Club is inviting anyone interested in learning about the sport of lacrosse to attend one of their practices.  Practices are being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00 at the Ames middle school football complex.

Money Unit at Edwards Elementary

Money Unit at Edwards

Edwards Elementary 2nd graders celebrated the end of their “Money Unit” by being able to apply some of the skills they learned. The four 2nd grade classrooms of Laura Clausen, Kelly Hansen, Terri Boeding-Lincoln and Jody Lickhart, were set up as a stores (toy, candy, book, and restaurant) that students rotated through and were able to spend their plastic money.

Ames High Boys Basketball Team Crowned 2022 State Champions

Ames High Boys Basketball State Champions

The Ames High boys basketball team captured the 2022 Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) 4A State Championship in dominating fashion in a 68-37 win over the Johnston Dragons. The title capped off a historic season, added another title to an already storied program, and sent off the current high school gymnasium in style.

ODD Block Day

Congratulations to the High School Science Olympiad Team! They took 1st place at the Science Olympiad State Tournament at UNI on Saturday, March 26th. They now move on to the National Tournament held May 9th thru the 14th! The team worked hard this season and looks forward to competing with Science Olympiad teams from around the US! Way to go team!

CONGRATULATIONS:

On Saturday, March 12, 17 Ames High students participated in IHSSA’s State Individual Speech contest at ADM. Out of 22 performances, 18 received top Division 1 ratings, and 13 of those were triple 1’s. Six Ames High students were nominated to perform at the Individual All-State Speech festival in Cedar Falls on Monday, March 28—Ember Biggs, Julia Divine, Olivia Reed, Grace Bollhoefer, Madison DeLashmutt, and Libby Gens. Additionally, Olivia Reed was nominated in two categories and will be specially recognized. Congrats to our Ames High Speechies!

Congratulations to Western Iowa Science & Engineering Fair participants Alina Markutsya & Jason Ahn! Alina placed 2nd in Biology HS category with her project, “Biomechanical Analysis of Balance Beam Skills in Gymnastics”, Jason placed 3rd in Physics HS category with his project, “Inventing the ARE Board: A solution for the daily challenge of using an ordinary whiteboard”

Both students also received several certificates & awards. Alina & Jason, along with Angelina Chen, will compete in the State Science & Engineering Fair of Iowa event on Thursday, March 24th at Hilton ISU.

AHS Early Dismissal Friday, April 1, 2022, Due to Parent/Teacher conferences, Ames High School will have a 1:15 PM early dismissal.

Financial Aid Night for Parents of Juniors – Will be held in the AHS Cafeteria on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 7:00 PM.  A representative from the Iowa College Access Network will be giving a presentation to explain the procedure to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and the many steps involved in the financial aid process. This is a very informative evening for junior parents (but all are welcome).

Senior Art Show – Come check out the Senior Art Show now through April 1st in the Multipurpose room and see some of the great work from some of our AMAZING AHS Seniors. We also have an extra special opportunity this year with being able to auction off donated artwork (from past students and teachers) to help pay for cameras for our Photography students and drawing tablets for our Graphic Design and 4d Art students.  There will be extra viewing opportunities during Conference week in the evenings (March 29th and March 31st) to view the current Senior Art Show and silent bid on donated artwork from past students and artists. 

 SCHOLARSHIPS & COLLEGE VISITS:

A Representative from Northwest Iowa Community College will be inside the cafeteria on Tuesday, March 29 during lunch C from 12:34-1:04.

Applications for the Ripp Family Scholarship, the Ames High School Alumni Association Scholarship, and the AHS Class of 1964 Scholarship are available in Naviance. The deadline for filing is April 30th. Please check Naviance for the eligibility requirements for all three scholarships. Also, please check Naviance for many more scholarship opportunities.

The Ames High Culture Fair scheduled for Saturday, March 26 is postponed, the new date is TBD but please look out for the announcement.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes diCYples will meet today during Plus Period in Mrs. Dobernecker’s room. We will have snacks and a great end to the week!

National Honor Society Members! We will meet today during Plus Period (beginning 2:12 PM) in the Auditorium. It will be a meeting to elect our new NHS officers, so please try to be there. Email McKenzie Flemming if you are not able to attend. 

New club at Ames High, Progress. An educational POC LGBTQIA+ club. The first meeting is today during plus. Club will meet in Mrs.Martinez room (room 25) on Fridays during plus. Everyone is welcome!

Ames Middle School Teacher Named Trailblazing STEM Educator

Katrina Williams Trailblazer Award

Katrina Williams, an Ames Middle School Alternative Learning Program (ALP) math teacher, has been named a Trailblazing STEM Educator. This award, put forth by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and Challenger Center, celebrates five K-12 educators who go above and beyond to inspire the next generation of explorers and innovators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Williams was nominated by Iowa State University associate professor of aerospace engineering Dr. Kristin-Yvonne Rozier, who has collaborated with her on STEM outreach.
