AHS Daily Announcements

ODD Block Day

Ames High Young Americans for Freedom will be having a meeting this Friday, March 4, during plus period in Mr. Krajnovich’s room (room 16). We will be discussing foreign policy with China, including its human rights abuses and the threat that it poses. Anyone interested in talking about current events or learning more about YAF should attend. There will be snacks at the meeting.

If you are a SENIOR and are interested in participating in the Senior Art Show, come to the special meeting in ART C during Plus Period on Friday, March 4th to get more information. If you are unable to make the meeting but are interested in participating, email one of the AHS Art teachers before the meeting date.

Students – If you registered for an AP Exam for second semester and you have not paid, please make the payment in RevTrak by no later than February 28. If payment is not received, the exam will not be ordered.

Starting March 1 with the demolition of the Ames Municipal Pool, the access route for high school students from the south student parking lot to the main entrance, as well as the community bike route, will be slightly adjusted. Students will walk through the football stadium entrance and through the Activities corridor to the main entrance. The bike path will now follow Ridgewood Avenue to the south portion of the high school campus. 

Attention current Sophomores and Juniors: if you are interested in being part of the Ames Chapter of the National Honor Society next year, you can pick up an application in the Auxiliary Office or get an application online. Current NHS members do not need to reapply. Applications are due Thursday, March 24th at 3 PM in Room 229. 

On Tuesday, March 1, SACRE is hosting “The Reminders”, a musical group that performs reggae, soul, hip hop, and spoken word. Please join us over your lunch period on Tuesday in the MPR for the performance. Freshmen and Sophomores who want to attend, please get passes from Mrs. Muhammad on Monday or Tuesday morning during one of your free periods to leave the cafeteria during your lunch period.

A College Representative from St. Cloud State University  will be in the cafeteria Tuesday, March 1st during all Lunch periods.

The Army will be at the table in the Lobby Tuesday, March 1st during all Lunch periods.

Today’s lunch is Popcorn Chicken, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Brown Gravy and Whole Grain Dinner Roll.

CONGRATULATIONS:

Congratulations to Ames High DECA on their outstanding performance at the State Competition. Every single competitor was on stage and received an award. We came home with:

10 – First Place, 5 – Second Place, 4 – Third Place and 1 – Honorable Mention.

Congratulations to Alina Markutsya for being elected as Vice President of Iowa DECA and to Adrian Guan for being elected as Iowa DECA President. Shrey Patel is the outgoing Iowa President. This is the first time Ames High has held the President’s seat in back to back years.

They are now all off to the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in April! Good luck to all!

AP EXAM – SECOND SEMESTER PAYMENT DEADLINE

If your student registered for an AP Exam for the second semester and you have not paid, please make the payment in RevTrak by no later than February 28. If payment is not received, the exam will not be ordered.

ACT/SAT PREP CLASS PAYMENT DEADLINE

If your student registered for the ACT/SAT Prep Class and you have not paid, please make the payment in RevTrak TODAY. Payment is required in order to attend the prep class which begins on February 28. Also, if your student registered for the evening prep class, it has been canceled. If you are interested in the afternoon class, please see Mrs. Monroe in student services.

Students entering 10th through 12th grade next year who want to take online AP Statistics, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, and/or AP Computer Science in 2022-2023 need to complete the registration google document. The AHS Winter Musical “Seussical” starts tonight February 25 and 26 at 7:30 pm and 2:00 pm Sunday, February 27. Adults are 9th grade and above at $10.00, 8th grade and below are $8.00.

 Scholarship- Applications for the Ripp Family Scholarship, the Ames High School Alumni Association Scholarship, and the AHS Class of 1964 Scholarship are available in Naviance. The deadline for filing is April 30th. Please check Naviance for the eligibility requirements for all three scholarships. Also, please check Naviance for many more scholarship opportunities.

The Ames High Culture Fair is back again! This is a fair for different cultures, ethnicities, and countries to show off their heritage through a booth that they will create for the fair. Countries may have taste tests and performances at the event. This is a great chance to show off your country and learn a little something while you create your poster during our workshop times. We are looking for people to create booths for their country! This will be held Saturday, March 26 from 12-2pm. If you are interested or need more information, please look for the Ames High Culture Fair Posters that will be put up around the school to sign up or use the Google form to sign up. If you have any questions please reach out to Mrs. Muhammad, Manab Jaily, or Riitka Tappeta.

No cash purchases are permitted at the gate. Because it is a postseason game; regular season passes, punch cards, or student activity tickets are not valid. 

Do you like to bowl? If you are interested in participating in bowling next year during the winter season, please stop in the activities office this week and add your name to the sign up sheet. This would be an official team sport for the 22/23 school year.

Seniors, Please check Naviance for the Payer Family Scholarship. The scholarship is for $3,000 for the student’s first year of college. Also, the student must attend a college in Iowa. If the student continues their post-secondary education and meets the requirements outlined in Naviance, the student could be eligible to receive $3,000 per year for three additional years. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2022. Naviance has many scholarship opportunities.

On Tuesday, March 1, SACRE is hosting “The Reminders”, a musical group that performs reggae, soul, hip hop, and spoken word. They will be visiting to perform and facilitate a discussion about Positive Self Expression Through Music. Please join us over your lunch period on Tuesday in the MPR for the performance. Freshmen and Sophomores who want to attend, please get passes from Mrs. Muhammad on Monday or Tuesday morning during one of your free periods to leave the cafeteria during your lunch period.

Students from Ames High School earned five Division 1 ratings for entries into the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) Large Group State Competition. On February 5 at Valley High School in West Des Moines, 19 students in grades 10-12 gave performances in Ensemble Acting, One-Act Play, Choral Reading, Reader’s Theater, and Musical Theater. Of those five groups, three were nominated as Outstanding Performers based on their state performances and selected to participate in the All-State Competition. …

INFORMATION:

Attention students planning to take the ACT or SAT this spring: Mr. Webb and Mrs. Engelkes will be offering an ACT/SAT Prep Class starting Monday, February 28, 2022. The class will meet on three Mondays and one Tuesday for two hours each day (February 28, March 8, 21, and 28). The cost for the class is $35. Please fill out the Google registration form or use the QR Code posted outside of student services and across from the auxiliary office. Registration will end on Tuesday, February 22, at 7:00 PM. Payment is due by Friday, February 25.

OPPORTUNITIES:

Track & Field Information

Athletes: Please complete the Track and Field Athlete Interest Survey. The first day of practice is Monday, February 21st! 3:05 start time in gym 2. Families: Please plan on attending our Track and Field Parent/Athlete meeting on Sunday, February 20th at 5:30 in the high school cafeteria. Hear about our program, meet the coaches, and get excited for the upcoming season. There will be lots of information and an opportunity for some vintage merch!  Please complete the Track and Field Informational Survey.

Oh, the places you will go with The Cat In The Hat and cast as Ames High Music and Drama departments present the musical Seussical. Written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, with influences from Eric Idle, Seussical will take you on a musical journey of loyalty, friendship, keeping promises, and the power of imagination with Horton the Elephant. Based on over fifteen Dr. Seuss books, several familiar characters combine to either help or hinder Horton from saving “The Whos”. Curtains for the show are 7:30 pm February 25 and 26, and 2:00 pm Sunday, February 27. Tickets are $10.00 for 9th grade and up, $8.00 for 8th grade and below. Come see this fanciful, fun, funny “fusical.”

Puzzled about your future? We invite you to explore all your possibilities by attending one of DMACC’s Career Discovery Events. Come explore career pathways and learn about future educational and career opportunities. Events are geared toward 10th-12th grade students, and teachers and parents are welcome to attend. P7 club will host a meeting today in Mrs. Jurgensen’s room (Rm 7) during plus period! There will be a devotional and snacks. If you’re looking for a group of friends to study the bible with or some encouragement at the end of a busy school day, this club is for you! 

Students entering 10th through 12th grade next year who want to take online AP Statistics, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, and/or AP Computer Science in 2022-2023 need to complete the registration google document. Registration for SECOND SEMESTER AP Psychology and AP US Government exam will end on Monday, Feb. 21st. The cost for each AP Exam is $96. All fees must be paid in full by no later than Monday, February 28, 2022. Please see the detailed information posted outside of the Auxiliary Office and on the bulletin board outside of Student Services. All students must register using the google document. If a student is registering for both exams, they will need to complete the google document for each exam. For the registration link, click here. The lacrosse club is kicking off its spring season.  Practices will be indoors at SportsIowa from 7-8 pm on Feb. 23, and March 2.  Outdoor practices begin the week of March 21 at Ames middle school. Games are scheduled in April and early May.  Everyone is welcome to come try lacrosse. No experience is necessary. Attention students planning to take the ACT or SAT this spring: Mr. Webb and Mrs. Engelkes will be offering an ACT/SAT Prep Class starting Monday, February 28, 2022. The class will meet on three Mondays and one Tuesday for two hours each day (February 28, March 8, 21, and 28). The cost for the class is $35. Register using the Google Form or QR Code posted outside of student services and across from the auxiliary office. Registration will end on Tuesday, February 22, at 7:00 PM. Payment is due by Friday, February 25.

Applications for the Ripp Family Scholarship, the Ames High School Alumni Association Scholarship, and the AHS Class of 1964 Scholarship are available in Naviance.
