Ames High 2020 Commencement Update

Dear Ames High seniors,

We first want to thank you for giving us your feedback around commencement this year through Thoughtexchange. As we explore ways to celebrate your high school career and accomplishments, your voice is the most important perspective that we must consider.

Based on the feedback that we received, it was clear to us that the preference is to postpone commencement to a date in late summer in hopes that we can have as traditional of a ceremony as possible. As a result, we will begin exploring what that looks like, while also acknowledging that the future is unknown at this point.

In upcoming communications, we will share information around dates, locations, and other logistics that we need to consider to make this celebration of Ames High Pride a success. Thank you again for sharing your feedback around this incredible event. Go Little Cyclones!

During this time of COVID-19 Closure, we want to still provide timely tech support to students and staff as needed while following the guidelines set forth to minimize exposure and increase safety.

Spring 2020 Tech Support Guidelines for the following Issues :

  • Damaged Devices
  • Student / School Google Accounts
  • Wi- Fi Options
  • Cleaning Computers
  • Offline Chromebook use

Family Support Services:

As a reminder, we have set up a Google Form that students, families, or community members can fill out to help the Ames Community School District identify families in need. Building principals are working with school counselors and school Student and Family Advocates to identify families who would benefit from food and supplies. We will be coordinating with community partners in this effort to serve our families.

The Google form can be accessed through this link

High School Required Options:

  • Ames High School will be providing Required Educational Services to students beginning Monday, April 20. The required option was chosen over the voluntary option because it provides the greatest flexibility for our students and families. The required option allows students to receive credit and progress toward meeting graduation requirements during this extended closure period. The voluntary option would not allow teachers to grade and award credit for work done during this time. Ames High teachers and staff have been preparing for what continuous learning looks like for their students and yesterday afternoon communicated the options available to students. In order to provide students with increased flexibility, several options are available to students. All options result in full credit awarded for passing grades.

    ● Option 1 – Continue learning and work for the remaining essential standards identified by teacher groups. The final grade will reflect this work combined with the grade prior to school closure.
    ● Option 2 – Work with a teacher to improve a grade in a class based on reassessment or completion of work assigned prior to school closure.
    ● Option 3 – Take the letter grade that was in place as of March 13th for a course.
    ● Option 4 – Choose a pass / fail option for the class.
