THANKSGIVING BREAK

There will be no classes on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 due to the observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Parent/guardian, in reporting your students absence please call the Attendance line at 515-817-0601 first thing in the morning if your child will be missing school. If you know the night before an absence you may call and leave a message. Messages may be left on the attendance line 24/7 if you call outside the normal school hours.

Please call the AHS Main telephone line at 515-817-0600 for all other inquires.

PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS BEFORE ABSENCES

If you know in advance of an upcoming extended absence due to a college visit, surgery, travel plans, family events, your student will need to obtain a Prior form from the attendance office. In order to obtain a prior your student will bring a signed note from a parent/guardian with the date/s and reason for the absence to the attendance secretary who will then attach it to the Prior form. Once the prior form is filled out completely and signed by the students teachers, the student will turn it into the attendance secretary 24 hours prior to the absence so the attendance will be

processed efficiently.

coordination to be successful. This is a great after prom event that keeps our students occupied

in a safe, substance-free environment. Post Prom cannot happen without parent help.

Please view our ‘Sign up Genius’ and consider volunteering so we can continue to have this

important event for our students. Post prom will follow the AHS prom on April 18, 2020.

DECEMBER SENIOR OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to the following Seniors for their outstanding leadership and positive modeling of being a safe, responsible, and thoughtful Little Cyclone.

Joscelyn Buss is a great positive role model for Ames High students.  Her hard work in the classroom and in the pool has provided her school with a responsible role model.

Brinley Horras She is an inspiration and is always lifting those up around her.  Brinley not only excels in her leadership skills but also in the classroom.

Cici Stokes Cici has demonstrated amazing leadership in how to be a positive influence in our school community on multiple occasions. Ames High is a better place with her around.

Camile Jackson Camille is a great representative of our school as she is active in athletics and in the classroom. She has been a great role model for our girls on how to work hard and be humble through all of her success. She is always striving to be better than she was yesterday.

Kyle Harms works hard in art class and helps his classmates with their work. He has a strong work ethic and is easy to work with.

Emily Noyes has been a true leader and has taken charge of the Set Crew for drama.

Amber Best has also been a great leader and has proven to be responsible as she helped take charge of the sets and crew for the fall play.

Frank Miller is just such a positive force at Ames High.  He is friendly to everyone, greeting them with a great smile and a high five or a hug.  He is compassionate and kind to others and goes out of his way to make others feel good. He leads in his own way; by avoiding conflict, and choosing to be involved in his school.  His contributions to yearbook and the photos in the halls help to make Ames High a great place to be!

And our final senior and winner of December’s parking space is Teagan Lipsey.  Teagan is doing a great job managing her classwork with her extensive extracurricular activities. She is always cheerful, willing to learn and participate and is a valued member of any group she is in.  I appreciate her self-advocacy for help when needed and being ready to help others.

REPORTING ABSENCES

AHS has a new Attendance secretary, her name is Melissa Asklof and we are glad she has joined our AHS team. The two most efficient methods of notifying the school of an absence are by signed note or phone call. Please call the Attendance line at 515-817-0601 first thing in the morning if your child will be missing school. If you know the night before an absence you may call and leave a message. Messages may be left on the attendance line 24/7. These messages are checked regularly during school hours and are entered into Infinite Campus. Please do not email absences to the secretaries as these notifications are not processed as efficiently and could result in an absence not being excused.

Confused by the constant notifications

When a student is missing school because of an appointment, the students must check in with the attendance secretaries in the main office for the absence to be excused. This means parents will receive unexcused absence notifications until we know your child is in the building. While these notifications can be frustrating it is to ensure the safety of your child. If you’d like to opt out of notifications please change the notification settings on your Infinite Campus parent portal.
