IOWA ASSESSMENT TESTING CONTINUES FOR GRADES 9, 10, 11
Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday have a 48 minute test schedule
It is important that students give their best effort on these assessments. Parents can help by seeing the students are well rested and have breakfast before coming to school on the test days.

Seniors won’t be testing so they do not have to be in the building during the test period. If seniors are in the building, they need to be either in the media center or cafeteria.

WINTER ORCHESTRA CONCERT
Thursday, January 26, 2017 7:30 PM AHS Auditorium
This concert will feature the 7th and 8th grade orchestras under the direction of Mr. Weihrauch and Mrs. Dieter. Mrs. Polashek will direct the 9th grade string orchestra and the 10-12 Symphonic Orchestra. Admission: $5 Adults, $3 Students and Seniors, $10 Family.

9th, 10th, and 11th graders will BEGIN taking the Iowa Assessments this Thursday and Friday, and finish the following week with testing on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. It is important that students give their best effort on these assessments. To do your best it is helpful to have had a good night’s sleep and to have eaten breakfast. 2 hour Delay Schedule 

Tonight, Tuesday, January 17th, there will be an Ignite CS meeting in MC-5 in the Media Center at 3:10 PM. Feel free to bring a friend or friends! Snacks and water will be provided.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Dobernecker will instruct Fiber Club attendees on the making of knit dishcloths. Everyone is welcome to join us! Please sign up in room 34 for this event so we can have enough supplies on hand.

There is no school Monday, January 16th, as it is a district wide professional development day.

STUDENTS WILL GET THEIR 2ND SEMESTER SCHEDULE FROM THE PORTAL

Tuesday, January 17th, the first day of 2nd semester, we will have a normal schedule with the PLUS period.  Each student has a computer and can access her/his 2nd semester schedule on the Portal. We do not hand out a printed schedule to begin the 2nd semester.

Ames Education Foundation Read ON Fundraiser
9:00 AM, Tuesday, February 14 at Ames Golf and Country Club.
Ames Education Foundation invites you attend its breakfast fundraiser on February 14th. Read ON supports Elementary Literacy – specifically Leveled Readers and Mentor Texts in the K-5 classrooms. Funds raised are then disbursed evenly to all our elementary schools, having immediate impact on nearly 2,000 students. Tickets are $25. This is a one hour breakfast and program that features speaker Ginny Seibert, a Language Arts teacher at Ames High School. Mrs. Seibert will share about the necessity of supporting elementary literacy, with interesting and entertaining facts of how developed literacy skills should be by the time students reach high school. WINTER ORCHESTRA CONCERT

Thursday, January 26, 2017 7:30 PM AHS Auditorium
This concert will feature the 7th and 8th grade orchestras under the direction of Mr. Weihrauch and Mrs. Dieter. Mrs. Polashek will direct the 9th grade string orchestra performing: Telemann Concerto for 4 violins, In the Company of Angels and Sleigh Ride. The 10-12 Symphonic Orchestra will perform: Spanish from the Nutcracker, Spanish from Swan Lake, A Pirate’s Legend, Romeo & Juliet Overture and Procession of the Nobles. Admission: $5 Adults, $3 Students and Seniors, $10 Family.

DEBATE
Ames High Debaters competed in the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Tournament at DMACC in Ankeny on January 6 and 7 with outstanding results. In a field of more than forty teams, all four Ames High Public Forum teams were among the sixteen teams that advanced to the octafinal round, including the novice team of freshman Hannah Huang and Silvia Aydinyan. The two varsity teams of juniors Ben Moats and Seamus O’Connor-Walker and sophomores Anu Lamsal and Hana Lee advanced to the quarter-final round. The team of sophomores Dakshina Paudyal and Helen Hu made it all the way to the semi-final round. Public Forum had more than 80 competitors, and Hana Lee placed third in the overall speaker rankings. The team’s two seniors competed in their final IHSSA State Student Congressional Debate event. Bailey Sterk received an excellent senator award in the A House and Nicole Flugrad won the B House. Kudos, AHS Debate Team!

A new session of Driver’s Ed begins January 30th and runs through March 1st. Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 – 8:30 PM. Cost is $325. Anyone interested may pick up the registration form in the associate principals’ office.

STUDENTS WILL USE THEIR 2ND SEMESTER SCHEDULE FROM THE PORTAL

Freshmen and sophomores, there were several schedule changes made over the weekend as a section of Honors World Studies was dropped and a section of US history was added. All students will want to check their schedules on the Portal next Monday so they know for sure their 2nd semester schedule as the teachers see it.

Come to the Ames Public Library tonight from 5:30 to 7:00 to learn about your classmates’ projects they made for physics. The groups have been working on their projects for months. The projects investigate exactly how certain things affect motion while driving.
