Hello Ames High! Are you thinking about joining a new club? Do you enjoy food, arts and crafts and having fun? If yes, then stop by Mrs. V’s room on Monday, Sept 28th after school to join CREATE. Hope to see you there.

The front office is looking for one or two responsible students during 5th period to help out. If you have an open 5th period and are interested, please contact Mrs. Reger in the Main Office.

Attention senior mentors! Your first senior mentor homeroom visit is Wednesday, September 23. Go visit your ninth graders.

Guest Request Forms for the Homecoming dance may be picked up in the OLD main office and turned in and approved by Wednesday at 3:00 PM.  No 8th graders. The dance is Saturday from 8:30-11 pm and ticket cost is $10 per ticket.

ID’s are required to enter the dance. No admittance to the dance after 10 pm. Once you leave dance you are not allowed to return.

Deadline to have a new ID made is Friday at noon. Cost for ID’s are $3.00. See the main office for a form to take to the media center.

We were just informed by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation that Yejoo (Esther) Lee, a senior at Ames High, has been added to our list of students earning the distinction of National Merit Semifinalist.  She brings our total of National Merit Semifinalists to 15.  Congratulations, Esther.

HOMECOMING DANCE REMINDERS

Out of school dates must have a signed Guest Request form turned in and approved by Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 3 PM. NO 8th graders.

Bring your school ID to the dance

No admittance after 10 PM

Once a person leaves the dance (goes outside the school building), s/he is not allowed to return.

COLLEGE FAIR

There will be a College Fair in Des Moines on September 27 from 12:30 – 3 pm.  This will be held in the Iowa Events Center at Hy-Vee Hall.  Over 150 Colleges and Career Resource centers will be represented.

AMES HIGH SENIOR SENATE BLOOD DRIVE

The Ames High Senior Senate will hold its semi-annual blood drive on Friday, October 9 from 8:00-2:00.  Pre-registration will be Thursday, October 3 through Thursday, October 8 in the front lobby of the school.  Parents and community members are welcome to donate by signing up online at bloodcenterofiowa.org. Did you know that one-pint of blood can save up to three lives? Just think how many lives we can save!!

Seniors….Last week you were sent an important email from Student Services regarding the college application process. See your counselor if you have questions about applying.

Don’t go brain dead… Support literacy! The Ames Public Library is holding a zombie-themed 5k fun run starting at 9am this Saturday in Brookside Park. There’s zombie make-up before and prizes after! Stop by the Ames Public Library or use the website on the Brain Dead 5k posters to register for the run. $25 for adults and $15 for everyone under 18. Hope to see you there!

Ames’ Fellowship of Christian Athletes will hold its first meeting this coming MONDAY morning, September 21, at 7 AM in room 34.  There will be breakfast food provided!  It sounds early but it will be a great way to kick off your Homecoming week.  FCA Huddle Meeting Monday, 7 AM, room 34. Anyone can attend.

The following college representatives will be in Student Services today. Please see Mrs. Ward if you need a pass to visit with one of these college representatives.

NHS is meeting today in the Multi Purpose room during 2nd lunch. Members should remember that attendance is mandatory.

There will be a panel discussion on Clean Power Plan, Renewable Energy, and how it can
benefit Iowa.  If you are interested, please attend the meeting tonight from 7-8 PM at the
public library.  All students are welcome and the event is free.

Friday Announcements 9-11-15

PSAT/NMSQT

Sign-up for the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Qualifying Test) test will begin Monday, Sept. 14 with Mrs. Ward in Student Services and conclude Friday, Sept. 18. Cost for the test is $15, checks only please, made payable to Ames High School. Juniors are reminded that this is the qualifying test for National Merit. The test will be given at Ames High on Wednesday, October 14. NOTE: THIS TEST HAS BEEN REVISED AND WILL BEGIN AT 8:30 AM (45 MINUTES BEFORE WEDNESDAY’S 1ST PERIOD.)

Top sophomores are encouraged to take the test as a practice to taking it junior year when it counts.

AHS ANNOUNCES NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS

Fourteen Ames High students have been named National Merit Semi-finalists as a result of their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). These students now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8000 Merit Scholarship awards worth over $32 million. Semi-finalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state and represent less than one percent of the state’s seniors. Congratulations to the following National Merit Semifinalists:

Nathan Chen, Karin Halverson, Hannah Hartmann, Xin Yuan Hu, Mattie Kupfer, Nicholas Leung, Caleb Litster, Aaron Mann, Isabel McLeod, Truman Meyer, Ben Popken, Benjamin Sulzberger, Alvin Tan and Robert White

SCHOOL PICTURE RETAKES

Pictures were handed out in homeroom on Wednesday for those students who had their picture taken on August 17.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 8 AM-1 PM Lifetouch will be at AHS to take pictures of students who DID NOT have their pictures taken on August 17 and also for those students who had their pictures taken but are not happy with their picture package. If you are wanting a retake, students need to bring their entire picture package back to the photographer when they have their picture retaken.  We encourage all 9th through 11th graders to have their picture taken regardless of whether a package is purchased. These pictures are used for next year IDs as well as yearbook pictures.

Monday is the last day to drop a class without consequences.

Parking hang tags were handed out in homeroom. If your car is in the parking lot and you do not have a hang tag, see Bridget in the OLD main office ASAP.

For today’s assembly students will report to HR first for attendance and then they’ll be called over the PA to the gym by class.

Interested in trying the sport of lacrosse?  There will be a free lacrosse clinc this Sunday Sept. 13 at Inis Grove from 1 to 3 pm.  Equipment will be provided. See Mr. Junck in Room 44 for more details.

All students should have a Student ID by now. If you do not, please see Mrs. Packer, Mrs. Reger or Mrs. McCarley by tomorrow. Starting Monday ID’s will cost $3. If you have purchased an Activity sticker and it is not on your ID, see the office secretary’s ASAP.

Parking on the curb is NOT permitted until after 3:15, a $20.00 fine will result if your car is parked there before that time period.
