SCHOOL DAY CHANGES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL

Parents and Students of Ames High School,

The week of March 4th-8th and the week of March 11th-15th, AHS will be following the same schedule as the Elementaries and Middle School in the district. This means that there will be no school at Ames High School on Friday, March 8th, Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th.

Instead of having parent teacher conferences the high school will be offering a Class Scheduling Orientation.  This orientation will be open to all parents and students that will be attending Ames High School for the 2019-2020 school year. The purpose for this change is to allow our teachers the opportunity to share with you what classes are available in all grade levels at the high school so our families can make informed decisions on signing up for classes.

The Class Schedule Orientation will be offered Monday, March 11th from 3:45 – 7:50, Tuesday, March 12th from 3:45 – 7:50, Wednesday March 13th from 3:45 – 7:50 and Thursday March 14th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Parents and students will only need to attend one of the four dates.  This is not mandatory but is definitely encouraged.

A more in-depth schedule of what this orientation will look like will be coming out next week.  We will also be looking at offering transportation for any students or parents that would need it during these times. We are excited to offer this new insight on the classes we offer at Ames High!

DECEMBER AND JANUARY DEBATE NEWS

On Saturday, Dec 1, three AHS Public Forum Debate teams competed in the Dragon Invitational at Johnston HS.  All three teams made it through the preliminary rounds. Mizzan Dilusso and Jacob Stevens broke to the octafinal round; Daniel Lee and Malik Davis got to the quarterfinal round, and Helen Hu and Dakshina Paudyal who had had a perfect record of eight wins, lost in the final round to finish second in the event.

The following weekend Dowling Catholic in Des Moines held its annual tournament, The Paradigm, and several AHS Public Forum Debaters competed.  Susanna Mkhitaryan and Silvia Aydinyan were quarterfinalists and added a second bid point to the one they earned when they won the NSDA Season Opener in Kentucky back in September.  They have now qualified to compete in the National Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in the spring. In the novice breakout, Freshmen Jerry Han and Jacob Stevens advanced to the final round.

On December 14 and 15 two AHS PF teams competed at the Blake School’s annual event in Minneapolis.  In addition to debating in the tournament, Silvia and Susanna had the honor of participating in the Public Forum Round Robin.

Finally last weekend, hoping to repeat last year’s performance at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Debate Tournament where AHS swept the top four spots in the Galligan Division of Public Forum Debate, six AHS teams competed.  This year in the Riggleman Division all twelve of our debaters made it past the preliminary rounds. Jacob Stevens and Rishabh Swamy, Mizzan Dollisso and Mariam Mkhitaryan, Malik Davis and Daniel Lee, and Helen Hu and Dakshina Paudyal were all octofinalists.  Hana Lee and Anu Lamsal were quarterfinalists. Silvia Aydinyan and Susanna Mkhitaryan made it to the final round and placed second in the event. In the Speaker Points Awards for the preliminary rounds of Public Forum, Mizzan came in tenth, Silvia second, and Mariam garnered the top place in the event, a notable achievement for any debater, but all the more so for a debater in her novice year.

KLEENEX REQUEST
AHS would like to make a request for Kleenex donations. Cold and flu season has hit us at AHS and we have a great need for Kleenex in the classrooms. Kleenex donations can be dropped off in the main office. Thank you in advance for your Kleenex donation.

REPORTING ABSENCES
The two most efficient methods of notifying the school of an absence are by signed note or phone call. Please call the Attendance line at 515-817-0601 first thing in the morning if your child will be missing school. If you know the night before an absence you may call and leave a message. Messages may be left on the attendance line 24/7. These messages are checked regularly during school hours, and are entered into Infinite Campus. Please do not email absences to the secretaries, as these notifications are not processed as efficiently, and could result in an absence not being excused.

PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS BEFORE ABSENCES
If you know in advance of an upcoming extended absence due to a college visit, surgery, travel plans, or family events, your student will need to obtain a Prior form from the main office. In order to obtain a prior your student will bring a signed note from a parent/guardian to the Attendance office with the date/s and reason for the absence, which he/she will have their teachers sign to alert them about the upcoming absence. At that time the teachers will let the student know if there is work that needs to be turned in prior to the absence or after the student returns. Once the Prior form is filled out completely, the student will turn it into the Attendance secretary prior to the absence.

SENIOR PICTURES FOR YEARBOOK
Senior Pictures are due by January 18th. Senior pictures should be vertical, color, head and shoulder shots with no props. Pictures will be printed at 2.25″ X 3.25″ Please email your high resolution image (300 dpi or greater) to yearbook@ames.k12.ia.us .
