CHANGES AT AMES HIGH THIS YEAR

This year is full of changes and we would like to make sure you are aware of some of those changes.

The first is that AHS is going to try something different this year and hold an Electronic Open House.  Due to the extremely difficult demands of schedules at the beginning of the year, we have asked all teachers to email the parents describing their class, their grading policy, and something interesting about them. I think it is going to be a great way to introduce our staff and the classes. If parents do have questions or they are wanting to meet with the teachers please email that staff member and schedule a time to meet.

The second change that was discussed last year with parents is the block schedule. AHS will have a modified block that will have 90 minute classes on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday students will have 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th periods and on Wednesday they will have 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th.  Monday, Thursday and Friday will be the traditional 8 period day.

The other change that is occurring this year is that there are no scheduled study halls.  Students that do not have a class schedule during a period will be allowed to go to three areas.  They are to be in the cafeteria, the media center, or the multipurpose room.  The “flex” period is allowing students to choose which setting is best for their academic needs.

If you have any questions regarding any of these changes for the 19-20 school year please feel free to call or email Brian Carico.

CYCLONE SENIOR OF THE MONTH

This year we will be recognizing a Cyclone Senior of the Month.  Staff will nominate senior students for their outstanding leadership and positive influence on our school and our community.  For September we had three students nominated.  Victoria Kyverga was nominated by Josh Gorman for her outstanding leadership in helping 9th grade students transition to AHS.  Victoria helped start the AMS MAT program that helps 8th graders with transitioning to AHS.  Simone Wesely was nominated by Jean Muhammad and Lindsay Wede for her outstanding support of the 9th grade students during the first days of school and for her inclusiveness of bringing people together.  Our third nominee is Cooper Downs.  Cooper was nominated by Eric Bappe and Ian Smith.  Both staff members praised Cooper for his positive leadership skills on the football field and in the classroom.  Congratulations Victoria, Simone, and Cooper.  An extra congratulations to Victoria for having her name drawn for the Senior Cyclone Parking Spot of the Month.

DECA PARENT MEETING

The 2019-2020 DECA Parent meeting will be held next Thursday, September 5 from 5:30-6:00 pm in the high school cafeteria. Come get information about DECA, hear about opportunities within the club, and get your student registered for upcoming events he/she would like to participate in. For questions, contact Vicki Hales (vicki.hales@ames.k12.ia.us).

REPORTING ABSENCES

The two most efficient methods of notifying the school of an absence are by signed note or phone call. Please call the Attendance line at 515-817-0601 first thing in the morning if your child will be absent from school. If you know the night before an absence, you may call and leave a message. Messages may be left on the attendance line 24/7. These messages are checked regularly during school hours, and entered into Infinite Campus. Please do not email absences to the secretaries, as these notifications are not processed as efficiently an could result in an absence not being excused.
