The Ames Community School District is excited to share we will offer a free breakfast and lunch each school day to every child in our community. Beginning September 8, any child aged 1-18 is eligible to receive a school breakfast and lunch at Ames Middle School, Edwards Elementary, Fellows Elementary, Meeker Elementary, Mitchell Elementary, and Sawyer Elementary. Grab and Go meals will be available for students that are in virtual learning at the above sites. Free meals will be available to students when they return to on-site learning at each of these sites. Meals will be available for free at Ames High School and Northwood Preschool for students when they return to on-site learning.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced last week that it would grant the flexibility for school districts to offer no-cost meals to every child for as long as USDA funding lasts, which could be as late as December 2020.
“It’s important to the Ames School District and the entire community that every child has enough to eat during this significant economic downturn,” Superintendent Jenny Risner said. “We are encouraging every family, regardless of current income or enrollment, to find the Ames school building nearest to them and join us for a grab-and-go, no-cost breakfast and lunch on virtual learning days and we are excited that we can offer free meals for all students when they return to learning on site.”
Ames families with students and young children can pick up grab-and-go breakfast and lunch at between 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, September 8th and 10th (two days) and Monday, September 14th (two days), Wednesday, September 16th (two days), and Friday, September 18th (one day). The District will send out a revised schedule when the instructional mode is determined for September 21st.
Students and young children do not need to be present when parents and guardians pick up meals, and student IDs are not required. Families do not need to travel to their current school to pick up a breakfast and lunch, they may visit the school closest to them. Grab and go meals are not being made available at the High School due to construction.
