About Our District

With three rebuilt and two newly remodeled elementary schools, a state-of-the-art middle school and a high school rated as the number one public school in Iowa (U.S. News and World Reports), the Ames Community School District provides a learning environment for students to master the academic and social-emotional skills, strategies, and concepts that will prepare them for a lifetime.

Learning and teaching in Ames Schools guides students to be actively engaged in discovering their own knowledge through each stage of learning. By collaborating and sharing with their peers, our students experience learning that is authentic and challenging. They develop processes that allow them to problem-solve, reflect on and adjust their thinking, and use prior knowledge to construct new learning.

Facilities- Building for the Future

The New Ames High Project information

We’re in the process of updating our facilities for 21st Century learning. The community supported a $55 million school bond issue in 2012 to rebuild or remodel all five of our elementary schools.  August 2016 marked the completion of the elementary construction initial projects.

Through other capital fund revenue streams, we’ve updated the high school security vestibule, built a new administration building and we’re improving the high school athletic fields. The Board has approved plans for completing a new facilities, maintenance and bus storage building in 2017. In April of 2018 the community supported a $110 million bond issues to build a new high school.
