On Friday, Jan. 19th, Ames High Winter Cheer is hosting our annual Winter Cheer Clinic for children in preschool – 6th grade!
Ames High Winter Cheer is made up of approximately forty cheerleaders, one head coach (Dana Logan), and three assistant coaches (Serena Paulson, Kalli Kantaris, & Emily Carlson). Our cheerleaders are divided into Freshmen, Junior Varsity, and Varsity squads. The cheerleaders cover over 100 events throughout the regular season, cheering at all 9th/JV/Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball games and JV/Varsity Wrestling meets, as well as making appearances at Boys Varsity Swim Meets and Varsity Hockey games. We also host an annual youth cheer clinic for preschool-6th grade Ames students to perform at the halftime of a varsity basketball game!
Seniors Aubrey Branch, Alison McHenry, Sonja Paulson, and Lydia Spurgeon were on the 2017 Shrine Bowl Cheer Squad! Shrine Bowl Cheerleaders fundraised for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals then performed at the Shrine Bowl football game in July at UNI. We also had a record (6!) number of cheerleaders selected for the Iowa All Stars team; they performed at the IBCA tournament in Grimes in March 2017. These 6 were: Aubrey Branch, Rachel Harms, Cecilia Monroe, Alison McHenry, Sonja Paulson, and Lydia Spurgeon.
The winter cheerleaders are a great group athletes, dedicated, hard working, caring, and full of school spirit!
