AHS Friday Announcements 3-30-18

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT FOR PARENTS OF NEXT YEAR’S SENIORS

On Wednesday, April 4th, the counselors will host a Financial Aid Night at 7:00 PM in the AHS Cafeteria. A representative from the College Planning Center will be available to explain the procedure to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

and the many steps involved in the financial aid process. This is a very informative evening for senior parents to be (but all are welcome), with time allotted for a question and answer session.

AMES EDUCATION FOUNDATION – AL AND DENNIS BROWN COLLEGE READY PROGRAM

Juniors and seniors who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch, may take the ACT test for free.  The Ames Education Foundation has established a College Ready program for students who qualify for assistance to be able to take the ACT test.

The test will be on Saturday, June 9.  Students that are interested need to sign up for this in Student Services by April 4.

SENIORS WHO PLAN TO GO TO DMACC NEXT YEAR.   Staff from DMACC will be here next Thursday, April 5, to help you complete the online registration.  Sign up for Dr. Avise’s Plus Pd for Thursday.

AP TEST TAKERS          

All students taking AP tests this spring will need to attend a mandatory pre-administration meeting at 8:00 am on Wednesday, April 18 in the AHS cafeteria.  The meeting will hopefully be over by 8:45. Anyone who absolutely cannot attend needs to contact Mr. Burke in Student Services.

ANNOUNCING THE 2018 SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS NATIONAL MEDALIST!

The following Ames High Students received the Nation Medal in 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.   National Medalist represent less than 1% of the submissions to the 2018 Scholastic Awards. Congratulations to:  Lucas Bleyle – Silver Medal in Journalism.  Amy Guan – Gold Medal in Poetry,  Tiffany Mayberry – Silver Medal in Ceramics and Glass, and Jamie Zhang – Gold Medal  in Comic Art.

IOWA JAZZ CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ames High School Jazz I has been invited to perform at the Iowa Jazz Championships.  This is the first time that an Ames High Jazz band has been invited to perform at this state event.  The Iowa Jazz Championships are held in Ames at Iowa State Center on Thursday, April 5. Admission to the daytime performances is $10 cash.  Admission to the evening finals performances is free.

AHS Jazz I performs at 8:00 AM in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium.  Parking is available in the lots South of C.Y. Stephens auditorium.

SSTFI – 2018 STATE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY WINNERS

On Thursday, March 22nd, Ames High students participated in the 2018 State Science & Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) EVENT AT ISU.  Students participating in SSTFI learn a variety of skills through the creating, investigating and presenting phases of their projects, including planning, implementation, problem solving, inquiry and communication.  Congratulations to the following AHS students for their successes!

TEAM NEUTRINO ROBOTICS COMPETITION

This past weekend, Team Neutrino, Story County’s FIRST Robotics Competition team, competed at the Iowa Regional in Cedar Falls, where they finished ranked 2nd out of 61 teams. They were alliance captains of the 2nd seed alliance, and competed till finalist standing, losing in a close tie-breaker in the final round. They were also awarded Engineering Inspiration, which celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school and community. They qualified for the World Championships in Detroit, and NASA will sponsor their $5k registration fee. Congratulations to Team Neutrino!

 

DANCE MARATHON

This years Dance Marathon will be held on Friday, April 6th from 8:00-10:45. Last year we raised over $15,000 for the kids! This year we are hoping to raise $16,000. Please consider donating. All proceeds go to Iowa Children’s Miracle Network Hospital which supports children who are battling life threatening illnesses. BACCALAUREATE

Please encourage graduating seniors to nominate someone who has been important to them in their spiritual growth to serve as a guest speaker for the baccalaureate service on Wednesday, May 23rd.     Speakers traditionally have been ordained clergy. This could include a parent who is involved in ministry, a pastor, priest, rabbi, imam or other spiritual teacher/leader. AMES HIGH POST PROM VOLUNTEERS 2018

We need YOU to volunteer to help with post prom!! Prom is just around the corner & we have many volunteer spots still open. Whatever your time or talent allows, we need your help.  It’s a fun evening for kids and volunteers alike! Don’t have time to volunteer?   Another way to help is through your monetary support.  It cost approximately $11,000 to host Post Prom. All donations are appreciated, but if every parent of a junior/senior student could make a donation of $40.00 we cover all our cost.  Our goal to collect all donations by April 3, 2018. Checks can be made out to Ames High Post Prom and mailed to Todd and Julie Schumer at 839 Poe Ave, Ames, Iowa 50014.

POST PROM will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 12:00 am to 4:30 am at Ames High School.  It is open to all juniors / seniors, and their dates, whether or not they attend the Prom itself. Games, entertainment, food, and prizes will provide a terrific night at NO COST to the students.

Do you like people? Do you like eating lunch? If you are interested in joining a club that is all about enjoying lunch, sign up for Mrs. Brenneman’s plus period on Friday, April 6th. There will be snacks. You can also contact Mrs. Brenneman or Deeksha Sarda for more information.

Are you interested in learning more about careers as a medical doctor, medic, EMT, or paramedic? If so, there will be a guest speaker during Plus period on Friday, April 6th. Sign up under Mr. Zmolek’s Flexi Schedule and come hear from current medical student and AHS alum Daniel Kinker, who is about to begin his medical residency in emergency medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.

Post Prom:

Juniors and Seniors who would like to be in the hypnotist show at the end of Post Prom. You need to pick up a permission form in the associate principal’s office and get a parent signature for permission. Those turning these in first will get first chance at being selected.

Out of school dance forms are available in the Associate Principal’s office and must be turned in to Bridget McCarley no later than Wednesday, April 11th (forms must be turned in before student may purchase tickets).

The AHS Junior Prom Committee is excited to announce this year’s prom theme as “A Night in Rome.” Prom will be held at the Scheman Building, 1805 CenterDrive, on Saturday, April 14th, from 9:00-11:00 PM (doors will close at 10:00 PM). Coronation will begin promptly at 9:30 PM. Please note the start time is 9:00 PM. Tickets are $20 and will be sold April 9-13th before school, during lunch, and after school. No tickets will be sold at the door. All students and guests must have their school IDs to enter the dance. POST PROM

All juniors and seniors are invited to attend the 2018 Post Prom Party whether attending prom or not on Sunday, April 15, from midnight-4:30 AM in the AHS gym. NO cost to attend, NO tickets needed.   More details will be included in future announcements.  

Tomorrow a representative from The University of Kansas will be here to talk to students interested in possibly attending in the future.

Monday March 26, 2018

The Spring Sports Parent Meeting will be held at Ames High School on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. Parents of student-athletes in Soccer, Tennis and Girls Golf are encouraged to attend.

Today is the deadline for National Honor Society Applications.   You have until 3:05 pm to get them to Mrs C in room 229. Students will be notified of selection in April.  

The Girls Track team will now compete at the Boone Invitational on March  at 4:30 p.m. at Goeppinger Field . Come support your Little Cyclones!

Seniors interested in auditioning to be a student performer at the baccalaureate ceremony should pick up an application in the main office. Applications are due April 1st.

DRILL TEAM ANNUAL SPRING SHOW

The Ames High Drill Team Spring Show is this Saturday at 6:30 in the Ames High gym.  Admission is $5, come watch the Ames High Drill Team, the AHS Step Team and All Male Dance Team perform and help the team salute their two senior dancers,  Macee Buss and Rebekah Wilson as they dance their last dance!

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY APPLICATION

For those applying for National Honor Society, turn in your applications to Ms. C in room 229.  The Deadline is Monday, March 26th at 3:05. Applications are online at the high school website, or in the Associate Principal’s office.  Students will be notified of selection by Friday, April 13th. The induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  Any questions can be sent to Ms. C.

Seniors interested in being a student performer for baccalaureate can pick up an application to audition in the main office.  Due date is April 1st.

SPRING SPORTS

The Spring Sports Parent Meeting is Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m., as follows:

Plans are underway for the 2018 Ames High School post prom party! The volunteer committee is working to ensure the students have a fun, safe, and memorable evening following prom.   This event is provided at no cost to the students. In order to keep it free, we will need monetary support from parents as well as generous donations from Ames Business and community leaders.     It cost approximately $11,000 to host Post Prom. SELECTED FOR ALL STATE

Two Ames High Students, Elena Andrews, Poetry, and Natalie Bretey, Solo Musical Theater, were selected to perform at the All State Individual Events Festival at the University of Northern Iowa on Monday, March 26.

Coaches for the students are Becky Riker, Judy Anderson, and Connie Ringlee.

RESULTS OF STATE INDIVIDUAL SPEECH CONTEST

Ames High students excelled at the State Individual Events Speech Contest held on Saturday, March 10 at Nevada High School.  The following students earned I ratings: Tianjin Xi and April Wigdahl in After Dinner Speaking; Elena Andrews in Interpretative Poetry; Ebisha Lawrance Christopher in Public Address; Natalie Bretey and Elena Andrews in Solo Musical Theater; Tiffany Rong in Storytelling; April Wigdahl in Acting, and Philip Ma in Review.  Students earning a II rating were Ebisha Lawrance Christopher in Radio Broadcasting and Clae Riker in Acting.

SOPHOMORE – YOUTH LEADERSHIP AMES APPLICATIONS

The Ames Chamber of Commerce and Young Professionals of Ames are pleased to present Youth Leadership Ames. Following in the footsteps of the Chamber’s successful Leadership Ames program, the Youth Leadership Ames program is designed to develop the community leadership potential of area high school students in the Chamber member school districts. High School juniors from member schools (Ames, Ballard, Gilbert) are selected to participate in this 9-month leadership program, held September through May. Each month, the selected individuals will focus on a different topic: team building, non-profit organizations, city organization, healthcare, leadership development, community development, business & industry, secondary education. They will also have the opportunity to tour area businesses and hear from community and business leaders. A graduation event concludes the year.

Tuition for the Youth Leadership Ames program will be free to the participating high school juniors. (Student must be a junior at the start of the 2018-2019 school year to apply) Facilitated and funded by the Ames Chamber of Commerce and Young Professionals of Ames.

On Thursday, March 23, six students from Ames Middle School competed in the state Mathcounts tournament held at DMACC.

In the overall team competition, the Ames Middle School team of Ne Dassanayake, Rishabh Swamy, Suya Que and Caleb Sheldon finished in 3rd place.

Individually, Ne and Rishabh finished in the top 10, with Ne winning the Iowa State Championship. Ne will be part of the state of Iowa team that will compete at the national competition in May in Washington D.C.. Suya Que and Jixiang Li also finished in the top 25% of individuals. Adil Orysapayev represented Ames as an alternate, and the co-sponsors were Robert Alden and Lauren Booten.

Please congratulate these students on an outstanding day. They have worked very hard this year and their efforts payed off. Well Done!

Drill Team Tryouts are MondayMarch 26th at 6:30 in the Spirit Room at Ames High.  Fall Cheer and Competition Cheer Tryouts are Thursday-March 29th at 6:30 in the Spirit Room at Ames HIgh

For both tryouts wear any solid color top and solid color bottoms.

Your hair must be pulled up. A bow is optional.  Bring snacks and homework to work on when not practicing during the audition process.

The Spring Sports Parent Meeting will be held at Ames High School on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. Parents of student-athletes in Soccer, Tennis and Girls Golf are encouraged to attend.

The Deadline to turn in your application for National Honor Society is Monday, March 26th at 3:05.  Talk to Mrs. C if you have any questions.

You can still get applications to audition as a student performer for baccalaureate. Pick up an application in the main office.  They will be due April 1 st.

The Mount Vernon Relays scheduled for March 24 at Coe College has been cancelled due to forecasted weather conditions.

National Honor Society members, remember that there is a meeting today during 2nd lunch in the Multipurpose room.
