Ames High Junior Performs at Prestigious Sydney Opera House

Sydney Opera House

Julie-Michelle Manohar, a 16-year-old junior from Ames High School, recently performed at the world-renowned Sydney Opera House as part of the prestigious 2017 High School Honors Performance Series (HPS) honor choir. The HPS program provides a selective learning and performance opportunity to qualified high school musicians who are invited to apply after being nominated by music teachers/directors familiar with their accomplishments. Students are accepted after a review by the Honors Selection Board based on their talent and achievements demonstrated in the application and audition recording.

Julie-Michelle (pictured right) auditioned and was selected to sing Soprano-1. HPS processed 18,000 nominations this year for their various programs at the Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House. According to the director, Nancy Richardson, 750 of these nominations were for the 2017 High School HPS at the Sydney Opera House of which only 150 were selected- 80 for the HPS choir, and 70 for the HPS orchestra. This was an international program; performers arrived from 44 states within the United States, Guam, several provinces of Canada, Australia, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and South Korea.

Dr. Jeffery L. Ames, a distinguished conductor and composer, serving as Director of Choral Activities at Belmont University, conducted the choir. On July 10, the honor choir performed “Goin’ Home” by Antonín Dvořák, arranged Paul Langford, “Three Australian Bush Songs” by Iain Grandage, “My Wordless Prayer” by Craig Courtney, “Tshotsholoza,” a South African Freedom Song, arranged by Jeffrey L. Ames, “The Call of Music” by Joseph Martin at the Sydney Opera House. Their final number was a gospel tune: “Let Everything That Hath Breath,” by Dr. Jeffery Ames himself. After a pre-screening and a second round of auditions, Julie-Michelle was one of two people selected to sing a solo in that piece.

In her own words: “I was accepted into the 2017 High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House, but I chose to do the Sydney program instead. I feel so honored to have been able to work with outstanding musicians and directors from all over the world. To be able to come together to perform at the beautiful Sydney Opera House is an experience I’ll never forget.”

Parents can save themselves some time by printing their student’s Open House Schedule from the Infinite Campus portal. The Open House Schedule will also give the times for each period.  When on the portal, go to Reports and pick Open House Schedule. Otherwise, parents may wait in line in the front lobby to pick up a copy of their son’s/daughter’s open house schedule.

Parents with more than one student at AHS have found it helpful to have their students’ schedules ahead of time, so they can plan their evening.

Back to School Night gives you the opportunity to trace the path your student(s) have at Ames High. By following an abbreviated schedule of classes, you can meet the teachers and hear an overview of each course. When your student has a study hall or open period, you are invited to the cafeteria where representatives from Iowa State, Iowa, UNI, and DMACC will be available.

KLEENEX REQUEST

AHS would also like to make a request for Kleenex donations. Cold and flu season will soon be upon us and we will have a great need for Kleenex in the classrooms with over 1300 students. Kleenex donations can be dropped off in the main office. Thank you in advance for your Kleenex donation.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE
The AHS attendance office would like to remind families of our attendance procedures. If a
student has an appointment or needs to leave during the school day, the parent/guardian is to
call absences into the attendance line (817-0601) first thing in the morning or write and sign a
note, which details the reason for the absence. The student should take the note to the main
office where the student will be issued a pass to give to his/her teacher to leave class early.
When a student returns the same day, he/she should check back into the main office where the
return time will be noted.
If a student gets sick during the school day, he/she should go to the nurse’s office. Students
should not leave the building due to illness without reporting to the nurse first and getting signed
out.

PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS BEFORE ANTICIPATED ABSENCES
When it is known in advance that a student will be absent from school, the parent/guardian
needs to send a note with the student to the attendance office with the reason for the absence
and sign it, at least three days in advance. The attendance office will attach the note to a Prior
form for the student to have their teachers sign before returning it to the attendance office.
Without a Prior, the absence may be unexcused.

DRIVERS ED
Teen Driver is offering a session of Drivers Ed starting Tuesday, August 29. Applications can be
picked up and returned to Mrs. McCarley in the old main office.
