Friday Announcements 8-26-16

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT, Monday, August 29

Back to School Night starts with 1st period at 6:15 PM and will be followed by eight 8-minute periods. Since Back to School Night usually attracts nearly 1,000 adults, an early arrival will be helpful.

At 5:45 prior to the start of the Back to School Night there will be a meeting for parents of ALP students in room 212 and a meeting for parents of ELP students (9th grade ELP parents will meet in the Auditorium, 10th, 11th and 12th grade in the Multi Purpose Room).

Parents can save themselves some time by printing their student’s Open House Schedule from the Infinite Campus portal. The Open House Schedule will also give the times for each period. Go to reports and pick Open House Schedule. Otherwise, parents may wait in line in the front lobby to pick up a copy of their son’s/daughter’s open house schedule.

Parents with more than one student at AHS have found it helpful to have their students’ schedules ahead of time, so they can plan their evening.

Back to School Night gives you the opportunity to trace the path your student(s) have at Ames High. By following an abbreviated schedule of classes, you can meet the teachers and hear an overview of each course. When your student has a study hall or open period, you are invited to the cafeteria where representatives from Iowa State, Iowa, UNI, and DMACC will be available.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE

The AHS attendance office would like to remind families of our attendance procedures. If a student has an appointment or needs to leave during the school day, the parent/guardian is to call absences into the attendance line (817-0601) first thing in the morning or write and sign a note, which details the reason for the absence. The student should take the note to the main office where the student will be issued a pass to give to his/her teacher to leave class early. When a student returns the same day, he/she should check back into the main office where the return time will be noted.

If a student gets sick during the school day, he/she should go to the nurse’s office. Students should not leave the building due to illness without reporting to the nurse first.

PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS BEFORE ANTICIPATED ABSENCES

When it is known in advance that a student will be absent from school, the parent/guardian needs to send a note with the student to the attendance office with the reason for the absence and sign it, at least three days in advance. The attendance office will attach the note to a Prior form for the student to have their teachers sign before returning it to the attendance office. Without a Prior, the absence may be unexcused.

DRIVERS ED

Teen Driver is offering a session of Drivers Ed starting Wednesday, August 31. Applications can be picked up and returned to Mrs. McCarley in the old main office.

REGISTRATION

Parents are reminded that there are two parts to registration. First is the registration packet, which gets turned in to the main office at the high school. Second is the online registration information on your parent portal. If you haven’t already done so, please complete both parts of the registration before the first day of school.

BUS PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF LOCATION MOVED ENABLING PARENTS TO USE BOTH CIRCLE DRIVES IN FRONT OF AHS

Buses will now use the parking lot north of the high school to drop off and pick up students. In the past, the south circle drive in front of the high school was used for buses. This change will help parents by enabling them to use both circle drives in front of the high school when they drop off or pick up their student(s).

Ames High School swim team garners national award

The The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) has named the Ames High School Girls Swim team No. 1 in the nation in its class for its All America Award. NISCA is a professional organization that supports High School coaches of all aquatic sports and is dedicated to coaches’ education and athlete recognition through its All America programs.

For team member Grace Snyder, the award was an unexpected bonus following a perfect regular season and a fifth state title in six years.

“We weren’t expecting this award, so we were shocked and excited,” said Snyder, who’s starting her senior year. “There’s a big range of schools in our class. We were especially proud of our academic showing.”

Coach Dan Flannery said he was more proud of his state championship team’s collective GPA than its meet record.

“The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) gave us a “Gold” standard for our collective GPA of 3.89,” he said.

Snyder credits the Ames Community School District for helping students at every level with “the skills and character they need to study, do their classwork, prepare for college and life.” She says the District builds students’ intrinsic motivation and all the teachers and coaches are supportive.

Flannery said he recognizes the girls; unselfish attitudes and work ethic that add up to success.

“The first thought that comes to mind is that all of our girls are willing to sacrifice for the good of the group rather than the individual,” he said.  “Everyone works so hard and has individual goals, but our Ames kids are unselfish when it comes to making the team better. Many sacrifices have been made over the years and sometimes it’s the little things that make the greater difference.”
