ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE
The AHS attendance office would like to remind families of our attendance procedures. If a
student has an appointment or needs to leave during the school day, the parent/guardian is to
call absences into the attendance line (817-0601) first thing in the morning or write and sign a
note, which details the reason for the absence. The student should take the note to the main
office where the student will be issued a pass to give to his/her teacher to leave class early.
When a student returns the same day, he/she should check back into the main office where the
return time will be noted.
If a student gets sick during the school day, he/she should go to the nurse’s office. Students
should not leave the building due to illness without reporting to the nurse first and getting signed
out.

PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS BEFORE ANTICIPATED ABSENCES
When it is known in advance that a student will be absent from school, the parent/guardian
needs to send a note with the student to the attendance office with the reason for the absence
and sign it, at least three days in advance. The attendance office will attach the note to a Prior
form for the student to have their teachers sign before returning it to the attendance office.
Without a Prior, the absence may be unexcused.

DRIVERS ED
Teen Driver is offering a session of Drivers Ed starting Tuesday, August 29. Applications can be
picked up and returned to Mrs. McCarley in the old main office.

PARENTS OF GRADUATING SENIORS
Starting next Friday, May 12, immunization cards may be picked up in Student Services at Ames High School. This is an important document that will be needed for college or employment. This health document should be kept with your important papers.

AHS DECA INTERNATIONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
Sixteen Ames High DECA students recently returned from Anaheim where they competed at the International Career Development Conference. Students either completed a 100-question exam followed by a role-play scenario focused on a specific business area or they presented a research paper that they created through work with a local business. Two of the students participated in a Leadership Academy, learning about ways to achieve both personal and chapter growth. Thanks to our business sponsors for their support in making this experience possible: Blue Sky Orthodontics, Hunziker and Associates, Danfoss, McDonald’s, Ames Kiwanis, Pizza Ranch, and Grandgenett Dentistry.

GATSBY BOX
Was your student having so much fun at the Gatsby party that they left any items behind? A jacket? Shoes? A vest? Have them check the Gatsby box in the old main office.

AHS SOFTBALL TRYOUTS
Reminder, girls in grades 9-12, varsity softball tryouts begin this Monday, May 8th at 4:00 PM at the new softball diamond.

Eight AHS students attended a Story County “Chopped” culinary competition, on Friday, April 7th at the DMACC Hunziker Center. Fourteen area school teams competed by creating three entree plates from a surprise basket of tilapia fish fillets or chicken breasts, sweet potatoes, asparagus, kiwi and crystallized ginger. Other pantry items were also available to these students to round out their culinary masterpieces. Second place honors went to the two-man team of: Joey Kind and Jahliel Finch. Fourth place was secured by Noelle Flugrad, D’Nel Vandenberg and Vonnie Castorena. Our last team consisted of Dylan Schaben, Corey Gibson and Greg Bernhard, who also learned valuable lesson about competition, food safety and preparing meals under a strict time limitation.
