Grading Late Work

Definition:  Late work refers to any course work turned in after the date/time it is due from a particular student.

Late work from a particular quarter turned in by the last day of the quarter and done to an acceptable level will receive a grade of 50%. Work not turned in and late work that does not meet the grading deadline or is not done to an acceptable level will receive a grade of 0%.

A similar practice also applies to quizzes and tests whether the student earned a grade lower than 50% the first time or had an unexcused absence from the test or quiz.  If the student received a grade lower than 50% the first time on a test, quiz or assignment, the student’s teacher will decide what the student needs to do and by when in order to bring the grade up to a 50%.

A student turning in acceptable late work by the late work deadline will still receive a grade of “F”.  But this grading practice will result in the student’s grade being 10 percentage points lower than a D- rather than the 40-percentage point difference if a 0% had been recorded.  There is better hope mathematically for this student to be able to earn a passing semester grade if the student continues to try.

This grading practice will also not reward a student who does not do the work or doesn’t get it turned in to an acceptable level by the deadline. This student will receive a 0% for that assignment.

There will now be consistency with how each teacher deals with late work.

Attendance Procedure

The AHS attendance office would like to remind families of our attendance procedures. If a student has an appointment or needs to leave during the school day, the parent/guardians are to call absences into the attendance line(817-0601) first thing in the morning or write and sign a note, which details the reason for the absence. The student should take the note to the main office where the student will be issued a pass to give to his/her teacher to leave class early. When a student returns the same day, he/she should check back into the main office where the return time will be noted.

If a student gets sick during the school day, he/she should go to the nurse’s office.  Students should not leave the building due to illness without reporting to the nurse first.
