Open Enrollment Information
The Open Enrollment Law permits a wide range of educational choices for students enrolled in Iowa schools. Parents and guardians may request open enrollment to a school district other than their district of residence if they meet application deadlines and have good cause as defined by law.
*March 1 is the deadline for K-12 regular voluntary open enrollment applications for the upcoming school year. There may be exceptions to the March 1 deadline for applications based on “good cause,” such as continuing education in the former district of residence following a move to a new district, or other considerations.
September 1 is the deadline for prospective kindergarten students.
Open enroll to a district
The application for open enrollment is made to the district, not to a specific school. However, parents and guardians may request a school.
Students in kindergarten through high school who are eligible to enroll in the district where they reside are eligible for open enrollment. Students who move out of the Ames Community School District who have completed grade 10 may continue to attend school in this district without applying for open enrollment.
Families of students who live outside the District must arrange for transportation to the school they are assigned for open enrollment or arrange for transportation to an Ames school bus route.
Students who open enroll into grades 9-12 must wait 90 days before participating in interscholastic contests at the varsity level. For questions of eligibility, contact the iowa High School Athletic Association at 515-432-2011.
