AHS ATHLETICS RECEIVE TOP TWO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC AWARDS!

The 2008-2009 school year was a banner year for Ames High School-literally. AHS athletic teams concluded their seasons as state champions or top finishers, bringing home banners announcing their successes. AHS student athletes performed well on both the playing field and in the classroom. Now, the hard work of those students and their coaches is being recognized by the Bank of Iowa Challenge Cup. Ames High School has been awarded the top spot in the Challenge Cup, a statewide and yearlong competition among all member high schools of the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU).

AHS finished ahead of 47 other Division 4A schools across the State of Iowa. Points are awarded to the schools for participation in post-season tournament play and individual team’s academic accomplishments, regardless of whether they participate in post-season play.

The AHS program is under the direction of Athletic Director Judge Johnston, who commented on the school’s successes, “The stars were aligned last year for AHS Athletics - we had a magical year and our coaches and student-athletes should be commended for their efforts across the board. We have the most dedicated and passionate coaches in the state and it was fun to see all their hard work and direction come together with some pretty talented athletes. Wow, academically, to do what we did in the
classroom, along with our athletic success, is amazing. This honor proves that it is possible to do both very well in our (Ames High School’s) challenging educational setting.”

“The Traveling Challenge Cup award is a program designed to recognize Iowa High School students for academic excellence in the classroom and outstanding achievement during athletic competition,” according to a news release issued by the organization.

In addition, the AHS athletic program has been recognized by the Des Moines Register as a 1st place finisher in an athletic-only ranking by the newspaper. The Register’s All- Sports Awards ranked Iowa high schools in three categories, with Ames High School falling into the “Large Schools” category, defined as Iowa high schools with an enrollment of more than 800 students in grades 9 through 12.
