AHS ATHLETICS SHINES AGAIN!
For the third time in as many years, Ames High School (AHS) has landed one of the top spots in the Banker’s Trust Traveling Challenge Cup, a state-wide and yearlong competition among members schools of the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU).
AHS Athletic Director Judge Johnston has announced that for 2009-2010, AHS garnered second place. Johnston commented, “AHS follows up last year’s first place finish with another remarkable year.” He continued, “What a great follow-up to arguably the best year in AHS sports history, with another great year for our school and our student-athletes.” Johnston said 19 of the school’s 21 athletic teams earned a combined 3.0 grade point average or better in the classroom.
The Banker’s Trust Traveling Challenge Cup is awarded to schools for participation in post-season tournament play and each individual team’s academic accomplishments, regardless of whether they participate in post-season play.
Ames High School enjoyed a stellar athletic year, with state championships in boys’ basketball, girls’ golf, girls’ tennis, and the school’s cheer squad. The AHS boys’ tennis team earned state runner-up honors, the team’s highest finish ever. According to Johnston, “nine other AHS teams qualified for state post-season play, and there were five AHS student-athletes who were individual state champions.” Ames High School also had numerous conference and district team championships, and several of the school’s coaches earned coach of the year honors.
“The Banker’s Trust Traveling Challenge Cup award is a program designed to recognize Iowa high school students for academic excellence in the classroom and outstanding achievement during athletic competition,” according to a release issued by the organization. |
