AIt was another banner season for the 2011 Ames High Girls Swimming & Diving team. The 2011 Little Cyclones squad won their second consecutive state championship on November 5th. The Little Cyclones tallied 336 points, 90 points over Runner-Up West Des Moines Valley.
Freshman Maggie James placed 1st in 1-meter diving with a score of 447.80 and Sarah Kemp was runner-up with her score of 443.10. The 1-2 finish was a great way to start the state meet for the Little Cyclones.

The State Champions in the 200 Medley Relay of Maddie Bro, Sydney Sorenson, Lauren Rosser and Taylor Flummerfelt set a new school record and state record time of 1:46.16 earning Automatic All-American Honors.

Taylor Flummerfelt set a new school record in the 50 Freestyle and Maddie Bro placed 2nd in the event only .10 behind her teammate. Both earned First Team All-State honors.

Lauren Rosser had an 8th place finish in the 100 Butterfly setting a new school record with her time.

Taylor Flummerfelt went on to win the 100 Freestyle earning First Team All-State Honors.

Maddie Bro went on to win the 100 Backstroke while Ames freshman Katie Sailer placed 5th and sophomore Sara Bentley placed 6th in the same event.

Sydney Sorenson placed 5th in the 100 Breaststroke and Lauren Rosser was close behind finishing 6th in the event.
The State Champions in the 400 Freestyle Relay of Taylor Flummerfelt, Rachel Shriver, Hannah Newell and Maddie Bro set a new school record winning the event in 3:31.65 shaving a full second off of the state record.

The Ames team scored in every swimming and diving event they competed in, solidifying the state championship. Additional place winners at the meet were: Hannah Newell, Rachel Shriver, Sydney Sorenson and Sara Bentley.

Coach Dan Flannery was awarded 'Iowa High School Swimming coach of the year' for the 2011 season.

Maddie Bro and Sarah Kemp were awarded Academic All-State honors.

Alyssa Bovinette, Maddie Bro,, Erin Gilligan and Sarah Kemp are all recipients of Academic All-American honors for the 2011-2012 school year.

Coach Flannery is a graduate of Iowa State University with a BA in Spanish and will receive his Masters degree in Coaching in Physical Education from Ball State University in May of 2008. He was a member of the ISU Men's Swim team and captain for the 1998 season. He was a member of the Big 8 Championship team in 1995 and the undefeated team in 1998. Coach Flannery was a high school All-American in the 200 Freestyle and swam for Johnston High School in Des Moines. He has been head coach of the AHS Girls swim program since 2002, and the boys program since 1998.
