Team State:
Ames Boys Tennis won their first State Championship on May 31st, 2011! It was a team effort from an exceptional group of tennis players: Alex Qin, Victor Wang, Nirvan Tyagi, Tommy Pitcher, Alex Huang, Calvin Song, and Bryan Graveline!
First round we beat Bettendorf 5-4 with 3 singles wins and 2 doubles wins. Closer scores then we had hoped and the players were exhausted. Iowa City, West beat Valley 5-1 without playing any doubles matches. They had over two hours rest before facing us in the finals.
Second round we were dominated in singles action by the young Iowa City, West only capturing wins at #5 and #6 singles. We needed all three doubles wins to capture the title. Heads hanging low we came together as a team and reminded one another of our strengths and experience in doubles. With rejuvenated hope and fire, the team went out and competed! Wins came easily at #2 and #3 in straight sets. It came down to Qin and Pitcher in the 3rd set of their battle at #1 doubles. Final set: 6-2, we won! State Champs 2011!!!! Ames 5, Iowa City, West 4. We will likely face IC in the finals again next year with nearly all the same players.
