13 Ames High graduates have been named Presidential Scholars. Only 141 students nationwide are recognized each year as Presidential Scholars.
In the AHS Class of 2011, there are 16 National Merit Finalists, 16 National Merit Semifinalists and 17 National Merit Commended Students.
Ames High School student performance on the ACT and SAT annually exceed state and national averages:
Ames High School's 2010 graduates earned an ACT composite average score of 25.0 compared to the state of Iowa average of 22.2 and a National average of 21.0
Ames High School's 2010 graduate earned the following average scores for the SAT: Reading 619; Mathematics 615 and Writing 582.
Consistent with recent years, 71% of the 2010 Ames High graduates enrolled in a four-year college or university.
Additionally, another 20% of Ames High School's 2010 graduates continued their educations at community colleges or vocational schools.
In May 2010, 331 AHS students took 652 Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Of those, 85% earned a score of 3 or higher.
In 2010, 73 Ames High students earned the designation of AP Scholar with Distinction for having an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and a grade of 3 or higher on 5 or more AP exams. In addition, 12 Ames High students in 2010 were named National AP Scholar with an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and a score of 4 or higher on 8 or more of their exams.
Ames High School won the 2011 Ames Lab Science Bowl, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, and advanced to the National Science Bowl.
Ames High consistently has 45 -50% of our students score in the top 10 percentile on standardized tests(e.g. ITED and PLAN) and 16-22% score in the top one percentile on those same tests.

- For the 18th consecutive year, the Ames Middle School Science Olympiad took first place honors at the Iowa Science Olympiad state tournament. This qualifies the team to represent the state of Iowa in the Middle School Division at the National Science Olympiad competition.
- Ames Middle School (AMS) 7th grade students garnered top honors in the 20111 WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition.
The students finished 2nd in the nation! Seven AMS students were among only 120 nationwide who
earned perfect scores.
