AMES—Ames High dance team members Eryn Huff, a freshman, and Hayley Johnson, a senior, placed in the top 10 at the Iowa Outstanding Dancers Solo Competition held in at Pella High School on Nov. 5. Huff placed second and Johnson placed 10th.

Coach Sarah Buss said the girls performed contemporary routines. Huff choreographed her own routine and Johnson co-choreographed her routine with the help of her dance teacher, Kelly Devine, of Des Moines.
“It has been several years since we have had any dancers place in the top 10,” Buss said. "I am very proud of them. They are both beautiful dancers!"
Huff said in the midst of the excitement of placing so well, she recognized she was in the company of many talented dancers.
“I was proud to represent Ames,” she said.
Kathy Enyart, executive director of the Iowa State Dance Team Association, said the girls competed in Class 5 among 75 soloists.
“A panel of judges evaluated them on appearance, choreography, technique and execution, and showmanship,” she said.
Johnson said the solo contest represents a team spirit that bodes well for the rest of the season.
“The seniors are providing great leadership and the underclassmen are showing respect and determination,” she said. “I think we can do really well this year.”
