AMES—For the next two weeks, Ames High School (AHS) will be playing host to a group of exchange students from Wülfrath, Germany. The German students’ visit is part of a student exchange program with AHS that is celebrating its 25th year.
According to AHS German teacher Sam Reichart, Ames High School both hosts exchange students and has its own students travel to Germany each year. Reichart added, “We also offer the opportunity for students to spend a semester at AHS and at our partner school each semester. This year, three AHS seniors will spend 2nd semester at our partner school (in Wülfrath, Germany) and we are currently hosting two students here at AHS during the current semester.
Beginning today, the students from Wülfrath will be following a class schedule, not only to immerse themselves in the culture of an American high school, but also to learn just as American students do.
The German students will not only learn more about high school, they will also gain a number of other experiences. The students, many times along with their host families, will be taking part in a number of typically American activities. Monday, the group traveled to the Mall of America. Later this week, the students will go bowling. This Friday, a trip to an Iowa farm is planned, complete with a corn maze, hayride and bonfire.
The highlight of the two-week visit is the 25th anniversary dinner, taking place Sunday, October 10 at Café Shi, 823 Wheeler Street in Ames.
