AMES—This year’s school board election is September 13.  Voters within the boundaries of the Ames Community School District (ACSD) will be voting for candidates to fill the five open seats on the school Board.  Also on the ballot: a question allowing voters to decide whether to give the ACSD the authority to issue bonds to fund the construction of three new elementary schools, and the renovation/remodel of three existing elementary schools.

The bond question will appear on the ballot as follows:

Shall the Board of Directors of the Ames Community Schools in the County of Story, State of Iowa, be authorized to contract indebtedness and issue General Obligation Bonds in an amount not to exceed $65,000,000 to provide funds to build, furnish, and equip elementary school buildings and improve the sites therefore at the District property on 24th Street, the current Meeker Elementary site, and District property on Miller Avenue; and to reconstruct, repair, improve, remodel, furnish and equip the Mitchell, Roosevelt and Sawyer elementary buildings and sites?”

There are six candidates vying for four 4-year terms.  Those six are, in alphabetical order, Rodney A. Briggs, Lucas Deardorff, Mary Jurenka (incumbent), Teresa L. Simpson, Francis Todey (incumbent), and Dan L. Woodin (incumbent). Two candidates are running to complete the remainder of the term of former Board member Roy Cakerice, who resigned from the Board in January 2010.  Mike Espeset is challenging incumbent John Hascall for the 2-year seat.  Hascall was appointed by the Board to fill Cakerice’s vacant seat through this election.

According to the Story County Auditor’s Office, early voting has begun and absentee ballots are available.  Polls will open at 7:00 a.m. on Election Day, and close at 8:00 p.m.  To view a sample ballot, verify your polling place, or learn more about early and/or absentee voting, please visit the Story County Auditor’s home page at http://www.storycounty.com
