AMES—The first day of classes for Ames Community School District (ACSD) students is less than a month away! For students in grades one through 12, the first day of school for the 2011-2012 school year is Thursday, August 18. Kindergarten students will begin the school year the following Monday, August 22.
Prior to that first day of school, there are a number of activities that will be of interest to students and their families. Among the first is the New Family and Kindergarten Orientation, taking place at each of the District’s elementary schools. That takes place Thursday, August 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Families should attend the orientation at the school to which their child(ren) have been assigned. August 11 also marks the day class lists are posted at all ACSD elementary schools.
Ames Middle School (AMS) is hosting its open house and picture days Thursday, August 11 from noon to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, August 12, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Parents/guardians are encouraged to visit AMS with their student(s) during these times to pick up schedules, gather food service and busing information, and explore the many clubs and extra curricular activities offered at the school.
August 17, students in grades 1 through 5 and their families are invited to drop by their schools from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The elementary students can visit their classrooms, meet their teachers, find their desks and/or cubbies, and drop off their school supplies. This opportunity is optional and ends promptly at 4:00 p.m.
Thursday, August 18 marks the first day of classes for ACSD students in first through 12th grades. It is also the first of two days of Kindergarten Glimpses, which are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, August 18 and 19. Students’ families will receive additional information from their schools regarding these Glimpses. Kindergarten students begin their school year Monday, August 22.
Parents/guardians of elementary students should also be aware of abbreviated school days the week of August 22. Mini-conferences will take place at the elementary level, and all ACSD elementary schools will dismiss at 1:45 p.m. each day that week. The early dismissal time allows for teachers to conduct mini-conferences with the families of their students. Please call or visit your child(ren)’s school for sign-up information.
The Ames Community Schools and its bus service provider, Durham School Services, wants to remind the Ames Community to watch for students boarding and exiting school buses. Remember, when you see flashing amber lights, you cannot pass the bus if you are going the same direction. If you are traveling in the opposite direction, you may proceed. For flashing red lights and stop signs, traffic must stop in both directions until the bus driver deactivates the lights and stop signs. Also, please watch for students who are walking to and from school.
