July 1, 2013

AMES–Hardware for the 1:1 computing program at Ames High School arrives in the form of 1,425 MacBook Air laptops, Tuesday, July 2. Each student in ninth through 12th grade enrolled at Ames High School will receive a laptop to use during the school year launching in August.

The Ames Community school board voted in May to approve the $1.4 million initiative.

Superintendent Tim Taylor said the laptops will offer myriad tools to reduce “one-size-fits all lecture formats and rote instruction in the classroom.”

“Research shows that students learn better when they interact with the teacher, other students and the subject matter, and when teachers adapt the level and method of instruction to the student,” he said.

Director of Technology Services Karl Hehr said technology staff will spend the next two weeks prepping the machines so they’ll be ready when students attend orientation sessions in August.
