AMES—The Ames Community Schools will soon begin registering kindergarten students for the 2010-2011 school year. This year, the centralized registration process will take place at the District’s newly renovated Northwood Preschool Center, located at 3012 Duff Avenue.

Kindergarten registration will take place Wednesday, February 24 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., and again on Wednesday, March 3, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Those families whose last names begin with A through M are encouraged to attend the February 24 session, and those whose last names begin with N through Z, the March 3 session. However, families with scheduling conflicts may attend on the date more convenient for them.

Children who will be five years old on or before September 15, 2010 are eligible to register for Kindergarten for the 2010 - 2011 school year.

Parents/guardians are ask to bring the following documentation with them to registration:

Original birth certificate or duplicate with raised seal
Proof of Residency (lease, mortgage, house title, utility bill with address stated)
Adoption or Guardianship papers, if applicable
Emergency contact name, address and phone number(s)

It is very important for parents/guardians to register their children for kindergarten. It helps the Ames Schools determine the number of kindergarten students attending school in the fall and assures the child’s spot in the District kindergarten program. The registration process is expected to take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Once again, representatives from the District food service provider Chartwells and transportation provider Durham School Services will be on hand to answer questions and provide information to families of next year’s kindergarten students. The Ames Community Preschool Center (ACPC), which provides before- and after-school care, will also have information available for interested parents/guardians.

Children are welcome to attend the registration with their families. Volunteers from the Ames Public Library (APL) and Raising Readers in Story County will be providing story times for children to allow parents/guardians the needed time to complete forms and gather information. The Ames Public Library will also have suggested reading lists for parents/guardians and young children, as well as general library information.
