AMES—The Ames Community School District’s (ACSD) Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Karen Shimp has gained additional professional certification. Shimp was recently awarded the Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations certification by the Association for School Business Officials International (ASBO International).
The certification, newly offered by ASBO International, is granted to highly qualified individuals who fulfill multiple requirements, including demonstrating eligibility through work experience and education, passing a comprehensive two-part exam, and adhering to the ASBO International Certification Code of Conduct. According to information released by ASBO International, the two-part exam tests the competency of school finance officials, in the areas of accounting and school business management.
A statement release by ASBO International quotes its executive director, John Musso as saying, “School business officials are the chief fiscal officers for school districts and hold an influential position in the community.”
Said ACSD superintendent Dr. Tim Taylor, “This is just one indication of how diligently Karen (Shimp) works to ensure she remains abreast of the latest and best practices for school finance. The Ames Schools are lucky to have such a dedicated and committed CFO. It is through Karen’s hard and careful work that the District has seen a positive turnaround in its operating budget and was recently able to maintain its high bond rating.”
Shimp has been with the District since July 2006. Prior to her work with the Ames Community Schools, she served as the chief financial officer for Cedar Falls Utilities.
