The mission of the Ames Community Schools is to ensure that all learners develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and personal esteem necessary to grow in and shape a changing society.
The program must be able to be understood clearly by the viewing audience independent of external explanation.
The topic of the program is related to school curriculum and/or activities and is entertaining or informative for viewers in the community.
Sensitivity to local issues and mores is evident.
Guidelines: Production follows the district's Channel 7 access guidelines:
Materials are not obscene.
Materials are not libelous or slanderous.
Materials do not encourage unlawful acts.
Materials do not violate any district policy.
Materials will not cause substantial disruption of the orderly operation of the schools.
Materials are not indecent.

SCHOOL-SPONSORED Television (CHANNEL 7)
The Ames Community School District utilizes Channel 7 to
communicate and promote the school district's mission through broadcasting
appropriate informational items.
Material cablecast over Channel 7 must communicate to
the viewing public one or more of the following district functions:
¥ Ames Board of Directors meetings,
¥ District instructional activities,
¥ District-sponsored activities, and/or
¥ District informational items.
Material will be reviewed for approval by the Director of School, Community and Media Relations and the Director of Technology per District administrative rules.

SCHOOL-SPONSORED Television (CHANNEL 7)
Programs sponsored by school district employees may be cablecast over Channel 7. Sponsorship entails viewing the program and certifying that it meets district standards. Student productions are to be encouraged and must be sponsored by a school district employee. Because Channel 7 is a non-public (closed) channel, all materials cablecast must be identified as materials that communicate to the viewing public one or more of the following district functions.
¥ Ames Board of Directors meetings,
¥ District instructional activities,
¥ District-sponsored activities,
¥ District informational items.
Programming may be underwritten by commercial enterprises and/or private individuals approved by the superintendent.
The following materials are not to be broadcast over Channel 7:
¥ Materials which are obscene. A cable program is obscene if:
a. the average person, applying contemporary community standards for the cable medium, would find the material, taken as a whole, appeals to prurient (sexual) interest and;
b. the work depicts or describes, in an offensive way, sexual conduct and;
c. the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.
¥ Materials which are libelous or slanderous as defined in Chapter 659 of the Iowa Code.
¥ Materials which encourage the commission of unlawful acts, violate district policy, or cause substantial disruption of the orderly operation of the schools.
¥ Materials which are indecent. A cable program is indecent if the program describes or depicts sexual or excretory activities or organs in an offensive manner as measured by contemporary community standards for the cable medium.
¥ Materials which violate the district's copyright policyÑPolicy EGAA, Printing and Duplicating Services (Copyright).
¥ Advertising that is prohibited by licensing agreement or contract.
The Process
A school district employee or his/her designee who wishes to cablecast will:
¥ Produce or acquire the program.
¥ Complete the Ames Community School District's Checklist for Videocasting. Questions concerning the videoÕs appropriateness should be directed to the Director of School, Community and Media Relations.
¥ Send or deliver the video and completed checklist to Ames High School in care of Channel 7.
Channel 7 personnel (Director of School, Community and Media Relations; Director of Technology; and Communication Technology Specialist) will:
¥ Review the checklist for appropriate completion. An incomplete checklist and program will be returned to the sponsor.
¥ Determine appropriateness of material for cablecast.
¥ Schedule approved material for cablecasting .
¥ Within ten (10) working days of receipt of the video, notify the sponsor of the proposed cablecast date or reasons why the material does not meet standards for cablecast.
When a resident or employee of the school district objects to a program being cablecast, the issue will be reconciled by implementing the district's Reconsideration Policy (KLB, Public Appeal About the Curriculum or Instructional Materials).
The standards contained in Policy KBB, School-Sponsored Information Media (Channel 7), will be used at all levels of appeal to determine the appropriateness of the program.
