Scholarships Administered Through the
Ames Education Foundation

         Listed below are some of the past and present scholarships:

AHS Athletic Booster Club Scholarship
(available Spring 2012)
Two scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding Ames High athletes. This year, spring of 2012, the amount for the male athlete will be $1,000 and the amount for the female athlete will be $1,000.

Ames High Alumni Association Scholarship (available Spring 2012)
Awards three to five $1,000 scholarships to AHS graduates. At least one scholarship is awarded to a student who had a parent or grandparent graduate from AHS. (At least one second generation scholarship.) All memorial contributions to the Ames High Alumni Association go directly to the second generation scholarship fund.

Grace Bauske Memorial Journalism Scholarship
The $1,000 award is possible through contributions in memory of Grace Bauske who taught Journalism, Composition, English, Honors English and American Literature at Ames High School from 1962 to 1986. The student must pursue a degree in Journalism, or English with an emphasis on writing.

Ingrid Brady Scholarship
The $2,000 scholarship is through a gift in honor of Ingrid Brady from Frank Brady. Mrs. Brady is a retired elementary school teacher from Gilbert. Her five children graduated from AHS. The scholarship will be awarded to a student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who is active at AHS and in the community.

Barbara Kurtz Bunning Scholarship
The $8,000 scholarship awarded over four academic years is through a gift in honor of Barbara Kurtz Bunning from Diane and David Bunning. The recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be a full-time student.

Beta Tau Delta Continuing Education Grant Scholarship (available Spring 2012)
Two scholarships, for $1750 each, were awarded in the spring of 2011. This was made possible through the Beta Tau Delta women's organization. In the spring of 2012 this scholarship will again be offered, each year, including this year, the amount and number will vary based on dollars raised.

Muriel and Bruce Hach Scholarship (not offered Spring 2012)
The $20,000 scholarship awarded over four academic years is in honor of the strong friendships of Muriel Hach (AHS, 1966) and Bruce Hach (AHS, 1965) with friends made in Ames. The recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be a full-time student.

Payer Family Scholarship
The $12,000 scholarship awarded over four academic years is funded through a gift from Jan and Don Payer. The graduating senior must have attended Ames High School at least three years, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, will be attending an Iowa university, college, area community college, technical or business school and has demonstrated a financial need.

Superintendent’s Scholarship
(available Spring 2012)
This is a $1000 scholarship, funded by Dr. Tim Taylor, superintendent for the Ames Community School District. This is for a graduating senior who has demonstrated the characteristics most desirable of an Ames High student.

George White Family Scholarship
The $1,000 award is for an Ames High Senior who has a 3.0 GPA or better. His family established the scholarship in 2007 in memory of George White. George was an avid supporter of Ames High School and he and his wife Lynn raised four children, all of who still reside in Ames and continue that tradition of support.

Endowed Scholarships:

Al and Dennis Brown Scholarship (not offered Spring 2012) The $6,000 scholarship awarded over four academic years is funded through a gift from Al Brown (Class of ’56) in appreciation for the outstanding education at Ames High School, given to him and his brother, (Dennis Brown - Class of 1963), This scholarship benefits a graduating senior who has overcome extreme obstacles, extenuating circumstances, or who has special needs, which may include a learning or physical disability.

Brent Anderson Memorial Scholarship (available Spring 2012)
The $500 scholarship is for a senior who has been active at AHS and in the community. GPA is not a factor. The scholarship is funded annually through an endowed scholarship created by Brent’s parents, Carol Anderson and Marvin Anderson.

Scott Berryhill Scholarship (available Spring 2012)
The $500 scholarship is for a senior who will major in English or a related field at an Iowa school. His parents Sharon and David Berryhill created the endowed scholarship, in memory of Scott. Sheila M. Walsh Memorial Scholarship (available Spring 2012) Sheila’s 10 best girlfriends, written about in Jeffrey Zaslow’s Girls From Ames bestseller, to give a female Ames High School student the opportunity to pursue higher education, created this $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to an Ames High senior with a 3.0 GPA or better and who meets the qualifications listed in the application.

Turk Bowman Memorial Golf Scholarship
(available Spring 2012)
The two scholarships, for $1,000 each, are awarded to one member of the AHS Boys Golf Team and the AHS Girls Golf Team. Turk Bowman attended and graduated from Ames High School in 1928. As a senior, he and a few of his golfing friends initiated the first AHS golf team. The scholarship has been made possible by family donations.

Helen Rae Daley Smith Memorial Scholarship (available Spring 2012)
This $1,000 scholarship is in memory of Helen Daley Smith (Class of 1940). The graduating senior must have attended Ames High School at least three years, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, will be attending an Iowa university, college, area community college, technical or business school and has demonstrated a financial need.
